If companies are too small to have their own sales force, so they basically outsource their sales force to an independent sales agent, such as ourselves. And with that, we're charged with taking their products to market.

Manufacturing reps main responsibility is to get buyers interested in their clients merchandise.

My prime objective is to sell products, sell [inaudible] products. And by doing that, you have to get face time in front of your customers; get around to see them.

Manufacturing reps often specialize in certain fields.

There are sales reps that do almost everything, because any smaller company will outsource their sales force.

As with most sales positions, you won't be spending a lot of time at your desk.

Fifty percent of the time is spent outside the office, calling on customers; showing samples, going over and reviewing projects.

In order to jump into this career, a bachelor's degree is helpful. Business or sales training, as well as knowledge in the particular field you're working in, is needed.

A manufacturer's rep, in general; typically sales, tract, a business tract.

Sales [inaudible] come in many different sizes and cover many different areas. Products are manufactured all over the country, so you have the opportunity to work anywhere.

They're located all around the country. There are single person firms and lots of people have started their own firms with one line, and then there are large, multi-state firms that will cover a whole region of the country.

Opportunities for employment may fluctuate, depending on the economic situation.

If you demonstrate some proficiency and you have enough desire, you can find a job.

What kind of salary can you expect to make?

Average salary for outside sales starts at probably $40,000 a year and it's pretty much limitless.

The ability to communicate well with others, patience and perseverance are all helpful qualities in this field.

 Have you sold anything?

Ah, well; I guess sales aren't for me, but maybe they're in your future. I'm Shayna for YouniversityTV. Bye!
