Hey there guys, I'm Shana and the earth is the core of today's career. Let's rock and roll. So what do we have here?

Right, these are a variety of diamond bearing rocks from around the world.

Doctor Haggerty's interests lie deep in the earth.

We've been able to narrow the areas both geographically and geologically in terms of where diamonds might be.

 Did he say diamonds?

Have a look down here, feast your eyes on this.

They're beautiful, though you can't believe these come from the earth.

 That's right.

They're so shiny and colorful. Like many geologists, Dr. Haggerty studies the physical composition and structure of the earth.

Were looking at trying to understand the dynamics or the function, the working if you like, of the earth's deep interior.

Geologists use their knowledge and discoveries to protect the environment.

It gives you an opportunity to travel, to really open up your eyes in terms of what it is we live on, and how can we possibly preserve it.

A major part of Dr. Haggerty's job is to go where the gems are. And have you, yourself traveled to all these different parts of the world?

I have indeed and all of the rocks that you see, I have collected personally. This is from southern Africa, I have rocks here from Russia, from Australia.

When he's not traveling, Dr. Haggerty spends more than fifty hours a week in the lab and office.

It is absolutely essential that one becomes at least articulate verbally and secondly is able to write, you're going to have to write reports almost from the very first day you're on the job as a Geo Scientist.

Dr. Haggerty is a professor at Florida International University. But teaching is just one option.

I could, I worked for a mining company without any difficulty whatsoever. I could also work for one of the various government agencies.

All of this talk about diamonds made me consider a career change. I like diamonds, how do I become a geo scientist?

You need to focus in on the training courses of physics, chemistry, mathematics and of course the geo sciences.

Getting a broad base means obtaining at least a master's degree and probably a PhD if you're interested in a research or teaching position. So you're looking for a pretty smart person to become a geo scientist.

Well, I would say so, yes. But I would say also that there has to be an intrinsic or almost a genetic love for the outdoors.

You should also enjoy working with others and have a keen eye.

Being acutely aware of one's surroundings is extremely important. So observational acumen is a fundamental element.

If you have what it takes to be a geologist, will there be a job for you? Dr. Haggerty's findings are promising.

We have not had any difficulty whatsoever. There are ample opportunities, amazing job opportunities, for students graduating from college.

Geology positions pay about eighty five thousand dollars a year. Not quite the value of a diamond, but here's some valuable info. A true test to see if the rock is real.

The street word for diamond is ice. The reason for that is, when you put it to your cheek, it's very cold all of the time.

The reason for the stone's icy touch, it's an excellent conductor of heat. If you thought one diamond was impressive, you haven't seen anything yet. Look what these guys left me alone with. Hope geo science has caught your attention. I know diamonds are my best friend. I'm Shana for YouniversityTV, see you next time.
