On set the director of photography is in charge of the entire look of a production. From lighting to camera angles. Making the image look as good as it can. Just doing whatever you have to do from behind the scenes standpoint to shot design to just to lighting design and just making it look, making pretty pictures. Many DPs George Barnes works with the director to make each shot look great. Yeah, I can do it anywhere. Yeah, ok, this'll be good. This isn't a typical desk job. And now I'm a truck driver. [ Laughter ] Very versatile. [ Laughter ] You got to, you really have to understand you know the bigger picture of production too. Right, so make it all happen. Yeah. Every day is fun. That is one thing that I do like about this business, every day is fun. And different for certain. Along with an unpredictable day comes an unpredictable schedule. Definitely no typical workweek. No? No. Are you like on call 24 hours a day, 7 days a week? Yeah, there's no standard time. I mean it could be anywhere, it could anywhere at any time, night shoots, middle of the night, Saturday, Sunday, Tuesday. And any place. Any place. Yeah there's definitely zero structure when it comes to yeah? [ Inaudible ] Open the stop. Many people that are interested in cinema photography go to film school but you don't have to have a degree to break into the biz. Experience is the most important thing. Ok. So I, I would suggest anybody that wants to be a director of photography get involved in as many student films or students projects as possible, spend as much time on the set as possible. You got to stay on top of you know what's the hottest set up, what's the hottest camera set up. Through the entire workflow, all the way through post production at the end. That's really important. That's what makes the director of photography valuable is when you can get on the set, set up a shot and have in mind the finished product. Ok, so you really do have to be a multitasker and you have to be able to think in all different capacities? Yeah. Yeah, you got to have, you have to be able to visualize the entire, the entire project, start to finish. So what can we do next? What can we do next? Here's a big pile of stuff, grab something. Alright. Whatever you want. Many aspiring DPs get experience through internships where they work their way up through the ranks on set. So is there work for people if they've got what it takes, if they've got the talent, if they've got the experience? There's always work for talented people that are eager to work. Always. Yeah? There's no shortage of that, yeah. Cinema photographers get paid per project or receive a daily rate. Their pay can range from a few hundred dollars to several thousands. Award winning DP Anosh Kaminski charges 6000 to 12000 dollars per day. He's worked on movies like Jurassic Park and Saving Private Ryan. So you're getting ready to film right now? Yep, we're getting ready to go. We're getting ready to go, we're just making our final lighting tweaking. That's my cue to take my place on set. I've learned if there's one thing you've got to have as a DP, it's a hard working attitude. Well, that's a wrap. I think I have clearly earned my keep here on set and I'm on my way to being director of photography. You think you can handle it? Why don't you grab something and help us out? Come on.
