Hey YOUniversity TV watchers. Nicole and Shayna here, taking a closer look into West Point. So come with us and find out how West Point turns students into leaders. West Point is a historical site in New York State that dates back to 1778 during the Revolutionary War. Today it remains America's oldest and continuously occupied military installation. West Point educates, trains and inspires the corps of cadets to be commissioned leaders of character for the US Army. It's a big commitment. Um, you gotta remember you're doing four years at West Point, then you have five years as an active duty Army officer. And which is really the fun part. So to go to West Point, you gotta want the great education but you also have to be-- want to be an Army officer. Your education at West Point has a mission: to prepare you for service as an officer in the United States Army. Cadets get more than just a world class education. They train mentally and physically. Every day you're doing something physical. Whether it's playing area hockey, football, wrestling. I have a scuba diving class later this afternoon. And that's one of my required courses. West Point is located on the west bank of the Hudson River. The Hudson Valley offers beautiful mountainous and rustic terrain. And it's close enough to New York City that you can be in the heart of Manhattan in 45 minutes. The West Point student body, known as the Corp of Cadets, consists of 4400 students. Cadets come from all fifty states, and represent all segments of American society. There are more than 600 women that make up approximately 15% of the student body. The student to faculty ratio is six to one. The Corp of Cadets is composed of people from everywhere around the world. I mean, we have international students from Taiwan, Cambodia. I mean, you name it, we have it. Um, but we also have, um, Cadets from all over the United States with extremely different backgrounds. It's just got such a diverse group of people that, you just kinda-- kind of--you-- it's unfamiliar territory at first, but you just kind of fall in love with them. All cadets for admission to West Point have to meet requirements specified by law and must qualify academically, physically, and medically. If you're looking to be admitted into West Point, you should have a minimum SAT of 560 for both math and verbal, or a score of 23 or 24 on the ACT. It's also important that you seek out leadership roles in school or community activities. Also, each candidate needs to obtain a nomination from a member of Congress, or from the Department of Army. And that's all spelled out on West Point's website, www.westpoint.edu There are four basic requirements. You must be 17 to 22 years of age. Not yet 23 by the time you enter West Point. Uh, you must be a US citizen. You cannot be married, or you cannot be legally responsible for a child. As a federally funded service academy, Tuition, Room and Board, Medical, and Dental care are all free of charge. In addition, cadets receive yearly salaries of more than $10,000. The education or scholarship value of a four year West Point education is more than $200,000. As America's first College of Engineering, today West Point offers 45 majors that encompass a broad range of subjects. A few student favorites are Management, Economics, and Human Geography. Here we have students able to go overseas each year. We're sending about 300 students these days. Get a chance to go spend a semester abroad. Study in a wide variety-- I think we're in about 36 different countries that they can go to, spend a semester, come back and use what they've learned when they graduate later on and are working with a lot of different countries as a Lieutenant or a Captain in the Army. West Point has nearly 600 full time faculty members, and more than 40% hold PhDs or the highest degree in their field. At West Point there are no teaching assistants, and all faculty members are fully accessible to cadets for one on one discussion or assistance. Every class has about, at most, fifteen students. So at any time I can, after class if I have time, just ask the teacher for extra help. Unlike most colleges, we don't really have office hours; we're always available to Cadets. Basically 24/7, we're probably the most, um, reliable and accessible faculty that exists because our only function is to ensure their success. All cadets are required to live in campus residence halls called barracks at no cost. And when you're a senior, you get upgrades to the rooms, like a couch, a refrigerator, and even an Xbox. There are usually two students to a barracks room. Could be three in a room. Uh, but they have everything they need for life. Everything's provided for students that come to West Point. There's no tuition involved. And all of our students receive a paycheck while they're here at the Academy. When you get on campus, you'll quickly discover that every West Pointer has a warrior's spirit. And it's called upon in every activity that they do. Especially out on the field. Hoo-ah. At West Point, there are more than 100 extracurricular clubs that provide a wide variety of activities designed to enhance the athletic, recreational, hobby, academic, and religious interests of the individual cadets. We have over 100 different clubs that students can be involved in. Anything from whitewater rafting, to downhill skiing, to team handball, you name it. Plenty of opportunities, plenty of club sports, and really, if a couple cadets come together and they want to form a new club, they can do that. They can start a new club if that's what they want to do. So plenty of opportunities. West Point's Eisenhower Hall Theater, the second largest theater on the East Coast, consistently hosts top name artists. Ever heard of Pavarotti, Jerry Seinfeld, Tony Bennett, and Jon Stewart? They've all performed there. It could be the first class education, or maybe it's the unparalleled leadership training, but West Point boasts some of the most well-known alums in history, including US Presidents, famous generals, astronauts, and world renowned leaders in business and industry. West Point is an exciting and memorable four year experience that stretches your intellect and prepares you for an important leadership role while serving our nation. So if you're looking to challenge yourself, and strive to become the best you can be, There's no place like West Point. Go Army! Beat Navy!
