Welcome to fabulous Las Vegas, Nevada. I'm Shayna for YOUniversity TV and you're coming with me to check out UNLV. University of Nevada, Las Vegas is located in the heart of the entertainment capital of the world, Las Vegas, on the southern tip of Nevada in a desert valley surrounded by mountains. Southern Nevada is one of the fastest growing areas in the United States, and Las Vegas is truly one of the most unique and exciting cities to live in the nation. UNLV's 350 acre main campus is located just east of the famous Las Vegas strip. The entire campus is a state arboretum and it's dedicated to the study and display of plants that are suited for this high desert climate. UNLV has approximately 23,000 Undergraduate and 7,000 Graduate students. 44% are male, 56% female, and the average class size is 30. In order to be admitted to the University, we look for a 3.0 in core classes from high school. We also look for an ACT of a 22, or a 1040 on the SAT combined between the math and the reading. For Nevada residents, the estimated yearly cost including tuition and fees is around $4,000 per year. For out of state students, the estimated total cost is around $15,000 per year. UNLV has 11 different colleges, including the honors college, and offers more than 220 different degree programs. We try to make, uh, our classes interesting. I'm known on campus for knowing that Biology rocks. Uh, and, my honor students I take out into the field. Uh, sometimes it's the first time they've ever been primitive camping. We take them out three nights to Death Valley, though no one has died. Uh, we take them to the north rim of the Grand Canyon. It's a great experience. They learn a lot of science, and they have a great time as well. UNLV is home to some truly unique majors. There's Gaming Management, Entertainment Engineering and Design, and PGA Professional Golf Management. Let's go check some out. Students come to UNLV because of our incredible host of great programs. We have the world's best programs in entertainment, and hospitality. The number one ranked program in hotels in the world, with campuses in Singapore and a new campus coming up in the United Arab Emirates. We also have amazing programs in the arts. We have creative writing and filmmaking programs that are tremendous. And they all take advantage of this location that we have here, so close to L.A. and of course, in the entertainment capital of the world, Las Vegas. The William F. Harrah College of Hotel Administration is internationally recognized as one of the top colleges for hospitality and hotel management in the world. Now can I get some room service or what? Las Vegas is the best laboratory if you want to learn the hotel and restaurant business. There's 135,000 hotel rooms here. More than any city in the world. And of the 100 top grossing independent restaurants, fully a quarter, or 25 of them, are located here in Las Vegas. Now are there any other activities you're involved in besides your major? Yes, I'm involved with a lot of things that have to do with my major. I'm in the mentor program, hotel association, and with hotel association, we go and visit a lot of different properties. And get like a behind the scenes tour. So you get to go to the hotels on the strip? - Right. - Wow, so can you name just a few of the ones that you've seen behind the scenes? Palazzo, Wynn, Four Seasons, Mandalay Bay. My students, um, work at the same time that they go to school. Meaning they have an on call job or a part time job, working front desk or as a banquet server, or in room service, or in convention and meetings planning, while they are taking courses. So they get their experience, and their theoretical work at the same time, which makes them a very valuable student to the industry when they graduate. I know each of my professors personally. Um, it's kind of two-fold, one, because my classes are small and two, because I really try to have a relationship with my professors. That's made the difference for me. I'm going for my general education to actually being in my major, that's made me stay in my major versus going to a different major. UNLV is a member of the NCAA Division I Mountain West Conference and participates in 17 NCAA sports. The UNLV nickname is The Rebels, but the basketball team is known as The Runnin' Rebels. They have the school's first national championship in one of the three major sports. Lots of school spirit on campus. The students are rebels to heart. If you're not wearing Rebel red when you attend any of the campus events, if you're not for us, you're against us. UNLV offers 11 resident halls for students. UNLV has more than 200 different clubs and organizations including Greek life, multi-cultural programs, service opportunities, leadership activities, as well as a variety of intramural sports. Hey, good, what's going on here? We've got the skydive club here. Okay, cool, how many members do you guys have? Uh, we have about 40 members right now. Okay. Your helmet. Okay. I'm ready, where's the plane? It's kinda heavy. Oh that is heavy. UNLV and through the student, uh, organization CSUN has a very active outdoor program. Uh, you can go on trips that are led by experts in the field, and if you want to go by yourself, you can rent all of the equipment necessary for camping, for snow-boarding, for, uh, canoeing, et cetera. UNLV's famous Alumni include TV host Jimmy Kimmel; Ronnie Vannucci, drummer for The Killers; C.S.I creator Anthony Zuiker; food network chef Guy Fieri; and notable athletes Randall Cunningham, Larry Johnson, and Shawn Marion. If you're looking to get an education as bold as the city of Las Vegas, roll the dice and choose UNLV. That's a wrap on the University of Nevada, Las Vegas. Make sure to check it out when you're here, because it's the only sure bet in town. Later.
