Hey guys, you’re watching
YOUniversityTV, I’m Shayna.

And I’m Nicole,
and today we’re at

the University of Alabama.

Let’s see what the Crimson Tide
is all about.

The University of Alabama
is located

in the heart of Tuscaloosa.

It’s just a few minutes
away from downtown

and right next to the banks
of the Black Warrior River.

There are tons of things
to do around,

um, around Tuscaloosa.

They have many art festivals.

We just recently had
the Black Warrior Art Festival

down by the river.

We’ve got some movie theatres
and we’ve got a skating rink.

The strip, which is located
just down University Boulevard,

has all kinds of great
restaurants and eateries

you can go to off campus.

And we have different venues
for music to come play.

So you can go check those out
on nights and weekends.

It’s just a great community.

There are so many
fun things to do.

Just the sporting events,
the cultural events,

always the music--
music events, we love it.

We wouldn’t live
anywhere else.

U.A. sits on 1,000 acres
of tree lined campus.

The architecture is mostly
Greek Revival.

There are a total of 200
buildings on campus

that range from original
historic structures

that survived the 1865 burning
of campus during the Civil War,

to new state-of-the-art
classrooms

and residential facilities.

‘Bama has nearly 22,500
full time undergraduate students

who come from
over 70 countries,

and about 72 percent
are from Alabama.

The student population
is comprised of

54 percent female,
and 46 percent male.

In order to be admitted
into University of Alabama,

a student must have
at least a 21 on the ACT,

score a 990 on the SAT,
and a 3.0 cumulative

high school GPA.

The University of Alabama
employs

a competitive
admissions process.

So students are considered
on an individual basis,

which looks at test scores,
and cumulative high school GPA.

The cost to attend
the University of Alabama

for in-state students runs you
just under $15,000 yearly.

Those coming from out of state
will pay around $26,500.

The University of Alabama
offers 80 undergraduate,

and 133 graduate level degrees.

Some of the top majors
are Arts and Sciences,

Engineering, Commerce
and Business, and Education.

University of Alabama is one
of only two universities

in the nation to have
a commercial television station

where students can get
hands on experience.

It’s very, very interactive.

I spend probably half of my time
in class discussions.

And we’re very much trying to
make that happen across campus.

You know, we want the students
to actively learn.

The reality is, you don’t learn
just by sitting back

and absorbing information.

You learn by doing.

The University has over 1300
full time faculty members.

The student to faculty
ratio is 20 to 1,

and the average class size
is 33.

The faculty are phenomenal.

They all seem to have
had an open door

and were very available for me
and any questions that I had.

They are very student friendly.

You can walk into the--
to their office

and just sit down
and talk with them.

They are available to
answer any of your questions,

whether it’s just getting
acclimated to college life

or, you know, something about
your particular area of study.

They are always available
to help you.

There is no other place
in the world

where football is more important
than in Tuscaloosa.

‘Bama has been crowned
national champion in football

more than any other
Division I school.

And Bryant-Denny is one
of the largest football stadiums

in the nation, currently seating
over 100,000 fans.

Roll Tide!

Well, we got the name
Crimson Tide from the 1930s;

we played a heavily favored
Auburn team.

Our original name was
the Thin Red Line.

We held our own in that game
and we tied ‘em 6 to 6,

and so, a sports writer
and the announcer of that game

said that we held our own
and that we looked like

a Crimson Tide out there.

This is the place
for school spirit

if there isn’t any other place
in the world.

Every home football game,
Saturday,

there are going to be
thousands and thousands,

and hundreds of thousands
of people out here

with crimson and white on.

The University of Alabama
has ten living communities

on campus.

You can choose between
traditional dorm,

apartment style,
and suite style.

Freshman are required
to live on campus,

and what you see
is what you get.

Next year this could be you
living in this sweet suite.

Cost of room and board
will run each student

approximately $7,000 a year.

My freshman year I lived
in Riverside,

which are our
suite style dorms.

There are four different
bedrooms,

you have one bathroom
and you share it

with one other person.

You have a kitchen
and a living room,

and actually right when
I would step out of my door

leaving the dorm,
there was a pool.

So, it’s absolutely wonderful.

It feels like you’re on
vacation all the time.

There’s never a dull moment
with over 200 clubs

and organizations on campus.

And ‘Bama has an amazing
rec center,

with cardio facilities,
a rock climbing wall,

and check out this pool.

Not only is there a water slide,
there’s a lazy river.

U.A. is ranked in the top 50
public Universities

by U.S. News
and World Report,

ranked 11th in Law
and 32nd in Public Law.

Of the many notable alumni
of the University of Alabama,

there are a few
that stand out.

Like football stars Joe Namath,
Ken Stabler, and Bart Starr;

To Kill a Mockingbird’s author,
Harper Lee;

and Forrest Gump’s author,
Winston Groom.

If you’re looking
for a University

that dominates in brains
and brawn,

then roll with the tide down
to the University of Alabama.

We hope you had fun on our tour
of University of Alabama.

And I think we worked
pretty hard today...lazy river?

Lazy river.

Bye guys.
