What's up guys, I'm Ferrari with YOUniversityTV. I'm here at St. Mary's College of California, a Lasallian institute based on the teachings of St. Jean-Baptiste de la Salle. This is the man right here, and I figured this was a good place to start our tour, so let's go! St. Mary's College of California is located in the beautiful town of Moraga, California. It's very picturesque, I've-- when I came here for my interview, my first thought was it looked like an Italian villa. It just has this beautiful architecture, just the rolling green hills. It's 30 minutes by BART to the city. So you can get kind of this nice, small school charm, and then go immediately off to the city and do what you want to do. San Francisco's really close and it's really good networking, um, with us in the Bay Area, and a lot of graduates and alum go there. Just a good place for opportunity and lots of jobs. St. Mary's sits on 420 acres of residential campus in the rolling hills with Mission style architecture and a picturesque setting. St. Mary's California enrolls 2,500 undergrads, 40% men and 60% women. The average class size is 20, with a student-to-faculty ratio of 11:1. So here we're creating a sense of community. We're very much a campus community where students get to know other students, they know administrators, they know faculty. So it's more of a family atmosphere than you would have at a big U.C. St. Mary's requires no minimum GPA or SAT. The average student has a GPA of a 3.34 and SAT critical reading and math score of 1100. All students can expect to pay an annual tuition of $33,000 and $12,000 towards room and board. St. Mary's College of California offers nearly 40 majors. Just a few student favorites are Business, Communications, and Psychology. Plus the school has placed 100% of its pre-med students into medical schools. Our desire in our Integral laboratories is to provide the direct hands-on experience so they get a notion of what scientific process is all about and it's developed from a historical perspective, so it's basically observation, data collection, analysis. Some students take January term. It's a month long intensive session that allows them to study on or off campus. They've done everything from traveling to Ireland to exploring the cultures of South America. Over 350 students are off-campus all over the world, traveling with a professor and maybe 15 to 20 other students, focusing on a particular subject often tied to that area, whether it's in South Africa, Russia, Italy, wherever they are, in the Caribbean. Um, so, that's going on right now. So that's an exciting part of the curriculum. Hi, sorry! I heard you from down the hall and I had to come and get a closer look at what was going on. Oh, no worries. You just rockin' out by yourself out here? Yeah, just chillin', hangin' out. Sweet, I'm Ferrari. Nice to meet you, I'm Alex. Nice to meet you-- I'm sorry for interrupting. Can I, like, talk to you for a minute? - Yeah, have a seat! - I'm taking a tour. I'm taking a tour today of St. Mary's. So we're just kinda, like, checkin' out stuff and wandering around on my own a little bit. What's your actual, what's actually your major? It's not music. Um, my major is interesting. It's called Integral. Um, it's unique to St. Mary's. There are only--really only four schools in the country that have it. But it's, it's kind of like a Philosophy major without the tests. Um, Integral is really a major intended to sort of focus the mind on how it thinks, um, not so much as on what it thinks. So it's not, um, it's not reiteration and regurgitation. It's more about being able to analyze, understand, dissect. St. Mary's California employs 200 full-time faculty members. 92% hold their terminal degree. I enjoy all the professors. They're great, they're really available to you, um, whenever you need anything. I know I have a couple of my professors' cell phone numbers if I ever need help with my homework, you know, text them, call them. The St. Mary Gaels host 14 NCAA Division I teams that compete in the West Coast Conference. Sometimes for a school of our size, people don't realize we're Division-- NCAA Division I athletic school. So, you know, our men's basketball team this year is ranked in the top 20. Last year it was in the NCAA Tournament. What that means is, like, every student can go and pack the gym and be part of the excitement of playing national powers in that sport. Our men's rugby team is in the top five of the country. Um, so we're an intercollegiate school where students really have an opportunity to get immersed in that experience as a spectator. On the other hand, over 1,500 of our 2,500 students are involved in intercollegiate and club athletics, so that's a huge part of campus life. St. Mary's offers four different housing areas. First years students like Myra usually live in the central campus residence halls. Pretty cool, huh? Additional halls, including Becket and the townhouse and canyon area, are reserved for upperclassmen. Don't miss your chance-- get involved with one of the 45 student groups and organizations. You can even start your own dialogue by writing hot topics for the school newspaper, The Collegian. Well, this concludes our tour of St. Mary's College of California. I'm Ferrari with YOUniversityTV, and I'll see you next time!
