Hey, what's up University TV watchers! Shayla [assumed spelling] and I are very excited to be on campus at Saginaw Valley State University.

Hope you guys are ready to rock! Let's go!

[ Music ]

Saginaw Valley State University sits snuggly in the valley of University Center, Michigan.

We're not far from the shores of Lake Huron. We have great recreational opportunities in mid Michigan very close to campus. Our campus is located in the middle of the tri-cities area, Midland, Saginaw, and Bay City.

There's a mall, there's a movie theater. We also have the Great Lakes Blues that play in Midland. A lot of students and faculty and the community goes to see them play baseball.

Well, well, well. Look who it is. The cardinal.

 Whoa!

Our tour already started and we can't really do this thing without you.

No! At least you cleaned yourself up. Let's go!

 True. Let's go!

Saginaw Valley is 782 acres with beautifully landscaped grounds. Built in 1963, the campus is still modern and inviting, with more than 70 percent of new structures added over the past 15 years.

That's so the [inaudible] students can get their hands dirty and get an education on alternative energy by working here at the greenhouse. They learn a process called verniculture, which is where they take biodegradable materials from the cafeteria and university and have these worms turn it into organic soil, fertilizer, pesticides, and fungicides.

SVU total enrollment is over 9,800 students. Fifty-eight percent are female and forty-two percent male. Eighty-two percent of the population is white, twelve percent are minorities, and four percent come from other countries around the world. The student to faculty ratio is 24 to 1 with an average class size of 24.

Saginaw Valley is the best-kept secret of upstate Michigan. We're a smaller institution that has about 10,000 students so we're actually not really all that small but a good-sized public university. But average class size for us still tends to be about 24 students, so it's kind of the best of both worlds. You can kind of get that big public school atmosphere but yet you still get that one on one attention in a classroom with your faculty.

The average incoming freshman class has a 3 point 2 GPA and 21 ACT. Yearly in state cost for tuition and fees are close to 6,500 dollars. Out of state tuition for the year is about 15,000. Room and board is roughly 7,000 and books are around 900 dollars. Seventy-five percent of students receive financial assistance.

Incoming students can choose between 70 undergraduate majors, 11 graduate programs and an education specialist program in the college of education. Some favorites are education, nursing, criminal justice, arts and theater, business and management, pre-med and engineering.

We're focusing more on the teaching rather than the research aspect. So while we have lots of opportunities for research, and we encourage our students to do that, the faculty members are engaged in the classroom and as well as in research. So our primary focus really is teaching the students and we use the research as a compliment to that.

The formula car racing team is open to all students. I mean hey, I'm driving this thing. There are over 400 teams that compete from around the globe and I'm in the world's quickest formula SAE racecar and its right here at SVSU. See you guys later.

All classes are taught by professors or experienced professionals in their field and 79 percent of faculty has their PhD.

The SVSU Cardinals are Division II University in the GLIAC. With several national championships under their belt.

School spirit is big on campus. Every Friday everyone wears red. So everyone's walking around football games going nuts. Student section's crazy, we've got a really good football team.

If you're like a laid back person or shy [inaudible]. It's crazy. People are running around yelling everywhere. It's just a lot of fun.

We have a lot of red pride baby. Whoo!

Students are enthusiastic to call Cardinal country home with plenty of housing options. Although freshman are not required to live on campus, over 70 percent choose to. Probably because SVSU has been ranked the best in Michigan by the Michigan Organization of Residents Halls Association. Let's go check out the inside.

Looks like we found a student moving in right now.

Saginaw offers lavish, on-campus townhouse apartments and all housing is within a five minute walk to academic buildings.

Choosing what to do at SVSU can be difficult with more than 110 clubs and organizations to pick from. Choices range from Greek life to academic clubs and just about everything in between.

SVSU's Arbury fine arts center is lucky enough to be home to the Marshall M. Frederick's Sculpture Museum. He was a Michigan based artist who's internationally known for his portraits, public fountains, whimsical animal figures and monumental figurative sculpture. See for yourself.

[Inaudible]. Oh! Just the [inaudible] I was looking for. You ladies mind if I steal him away for a second? I really need him to help me out with this.

I think we can handle [inaudible].

Are you sure? Is that okay?

 Yeah.

 All right.

 Later.

 Come on with us.

 Bye!

Have you got leadership skills and are looking for a great pad while making the grade? Then kick back and fill out your application for Saginaw Valley State today.
