Hey guys, right on time. We’re about to check out the University of Michigan-Dearborn. Just so you know, it’s currently a commuter campus and was strategically placed in Dearborn to give all qualified students in the metro Detroit area the University of Michigan degree. Let’s go. It’s a little cold in the winter, it’s warm in the summer, and the spring and fall are beautiful, particularly the fall with the changing leaves. For me it’s the perfect home because I’m a girl who likes all four seasons. So it’s a great place to live. The hotspot in Dearborn is Michigan Avenue, downtown Dearborn. That’s where all the fun’s at. Plenty of places to go out with your friends and eat, have a good time, cafes to go, you know, chill at, drink some coffee, do some homework. That's the hotspot, is Downtown Dearborn, Michigan Avenue. Downtown Detroit is probably a 10, 15 minute ride from here. And it’s worth every second of the drive. This is the Henry Ford Estate, home to the automotive pioneer and his wife Clara for more than 30 years. And today it’s a national historic landmark, and, of course, it’s located on the University of Michigan Dearborn campus. The University of Michigan Dearborn has set aside 70 acres of the campus as an environmental study area. And according to this, the property is intended to preserve the natural habitat for educational and research activities. Not just for the university, but also for the community. UM-Dearborn has a total of over 8,600 students. 49% are men and 51%, women. 19% of students are of color, 93% are Michigan residents, and 3% are international students. The admissions policy is students typically who are admitted here at the university, the middle 50th percentile have between a 3.2 and a 3.8 grade point average and between a 21 and a 26 on the ACT. So what that tells you is that we are attracting a very high quality, academically prepared student on the high end, but we’re also attainable for students who are the solid B student. Michigan residents can expect to pay around $8,000 a year, while non-Michigan residents will pay closer to $18,000. Plus books, supplies, and transportation will be about an additional $2,500. So it’s not exactly Mario Kart, but the University of Michigan Dearborn students get the chance to work hands-on with and in the automotive industry. Detroit is known as the Motor City, after all. Students can choose from 90 academic programs, undergraduate and masters degrees in arts and sciences, education, engineering, computer science, and management. Hard work pays off. Students in the engineering department get to create from scratch their own mini Bajas... and take them for a test drive. That is way harder than I thought. What’s unique in the college of engineering is that we have one of only two accredited software engineering programs in the state, and one of only fourteen accredited in the country. We also have a gaming lab on campus where students can do some gaming design. And we also have several programs in environmental science and we have an environmental interpretive center on our campus so students can use that as kind of a learning and living lab. UM-Dearborn has 292 full time instructional faculty members. 254 hold a PhD or other terminal degree. Students have access to sporting events at the U of M Dearborn and Ann Arbor campuses, including football games in The Big House. How has the telescope installation benefited the astronomy students? It has revolutionized how we do astronomy here. Up until fairly recently, with the inauguration of this facility, we used to do our observing on the roof of the parking structure. And it was a very temporary operation, it suffered from instabilities, and it really was very unsatisfactory. So we were delighted when we had the opportunity through the grant and construction to start this facility and, as I say, it’s simply revolutionized how we do astronomy. We now, with the telescope that we’ll see in a little bit, have an opportunity for our students to really engage in meaningful research and take data which will be ultimately of publishable quality, and the opportunities, even for our introductory students who just take the basic course in astronomy in the laboratory, is really quite, much more extensive than it has been. They can actually take CCD images, that is to say electronic images of galaxies, of nebulae. We can do three color work. And they get a takeaway. UM-Dearborn offers over 125 registered student organizations with 10 Greek sororities and fraternities, seven clubs, and an active intramural program with 17 competing teams. Experiential education is stressed at UM-Dearborn, and over 700 co-ops and internships are offered. 60% of co-op participants even receive a job offer upon graduation. Well, we did it. Thanks for joining me, Shayna Gene, and YOUniversity TV on this campus tour. See you guys next time.
