Hello everyone! You're watching YOUniversity TV. My name's Levon, and we're at the University of Northern Iowa, home of the Panthers. Let's get going on our tour. The University of Northern Iowa is located in Cedar Falls, Iowa, a medium sized university with a clean, safe environment and four spectacular seasons. There's a lot to do here in Cedar Falls, it's just such a nice community. You have downtown-- great dining, great shopping, and then you have the mall, and of course Wal-Mart, you know, and bowling alleys, water parks... It's just a friendly community. The 910-acre traditional and friendly campus has a park-like setting with over 70 miles of bike trails within a few blocks. They have paths all over the Cedar Valley and you can go and you can ride by the river, you can go and ride more through the wooded area, just sidewalks everywhere. We figured out it's about a mile to Cold Stone. So my friends and I bike to Cold Stone and bike back, and it feels real good! Northern Iowa has over 12,000 students-- 42% male, 58% female, and 6% are multicultural. The average student to teacher ratio is 16:1. I have met people from over 40-something countries and that has been great, and they are, as I said, moving towards getting more diverse people here, so that's really encouraging. In order for a student to be admitted at UNI, we first look at the courses they've taken in high school. We want to make sure they have four years of English, three years of math, three years of social studies, three years of science, and two years of elective. We take a look at their class rank, see how they're doing compared to the other students in their high school class, their ACT or SAT scores-- mostly the ACT score, and our average ACT is about a 23-- and then of course, how are they doing in those classes. Iowa residents will pay around $6,000 for tuition and fees, while those from out-of-state will pay around $15,000 per year. All students who live on campus will pay an additional room and board fee of around $7,000. The University of Northern Iowa offers more than 120 programs and majors with teaching, accounting, and psychology just a few of student favorites. One hundred percent of music education students land jobs after graduation. In fact, UNI has the highest percentage of music education graduates teaching in the state of Iowa. The University of Northern Iowa is home to the National Agricultural-Based Lubricants Center. Soybean research is conducted right here on campus, and that, in turn, has led to the creation of several biodegradable vegetable-based oils and lubricants. The University of Northern Iowa employs 741 full time and part time faculty members, and 62% are tenured. The college atmosphere of having one on on instruction with real professors with doctoral degrees, corporate experience. We don't have teaching assistants or graduate assistants in the classroom like you would possibly get at a Big Ten or Big Twelve school, you get real professors. The Northern Iowa Panthers compete in the NCAA's Missouri Valley Conference. The football team has been ranked number one in the FCS polls and has played in the national championship game. At the games, especially in the Dome in the McLeod Center, it just gets crazy. You can get over 15,000 people in the Dome, and game day, it's just roaring. Everybody's cheering for the Panthers. Looking around, there's not a whole lot of purple and gold on the outside, but as soon as you get on the inside, everyone bleeds purple and gold. UNI has nine residence halls with a nationally recognized residence life program, and one apartment-style campus living option. Plus, the UNI dining centers have been recently remodeled, earning them an award winning status. Beware when entering Lawther Hall. You might bump into Augie, the famous ghost. Rumor has it he lives in the attic and haunts all the rooms. I really think it's very easy for freshmen to get involved. We have over 300 student organizations here on campus for them to choose from. Anything from Monopoly Players Club to things that are more associated with their major. I'm on the Ultimate Frisbee Club sport team, and we travel around and do a lot of tournaments with that and have practice three times a week. So yeah, there's club sports, there's clubs for academics, there's clubs for singing, there's clubs for just about everything. Around Homecoming time, at midnight on the Friday of Homecoming, everybody gathers around our clock tower, the Campanile, and when it strikes midnight, you're supposed to kiss your significant other, and the rumor has it that if you don't do it, a brick will fall off the Campanile and strike you in the head. But if you look closely, none of the bricks are missing, so apparently everyone participates. If you want to steal more than a kiss and get away with a solid education from a traditional school in the great outdoors, check out Northern Iowa University. Well that's all the time we've got, but I want to thank you for joining us in Cedar Falls on our tour of the University of Northern Iowa. For YOUniversity TV, I'm Levon. We'll see you next time!
