Hey, what's up guys? I'm Shana and you're watching University TV. Today we're at Savannah State University. You ready for a tour? Let's go! Savannah State University is located in the historic city of Savannah, Georgia, in the southeast corner of the state. Savannah is well-known for its historic homes and public squares. For those who love the beach, Hilton Head and Tybee Island are less than an hour away. It's a delightful lifestyle. The largest historic district in the country and just a lot of fun. A lot going on. We're right now in the midst of a music festival, we have a great art museum, a lot of cultural things and some great theatres. Savannah State University's 175 acre marsh-side campus showcase its historic architecture amidst moss covered oak trees and native plants, including magnolias, azaleas and camellias. Savannah State enrolls approximately 3200 students from across the United States and from 30 different countries. We use the minimum requirements for a four year university system of Georgia schools. We look for 430 on critical reading, a 400 on the math and at least a 2 point 3 on a college prep curriculum. We will also accept the ACT, you can make a 17 on the English, 17 math, 17 composite. Tuition and fees, plus room and board, runs about 9,500 dollars per year for Georgia residents and about 18,600 for non-residents. More than 90 percent of Savannah State students receives some form of scholarship or financial aid. The university offers 23 accredited undergraduate, baccalaureate and five graduate Masters degree programs. NROTC is an officer development program that's geared toward teaching military discipline and great leadership skills for the Navy and Marine Corps. The NROTC program is a scholarship program where you have certain standards that the military has. A 2 point 5 GPA and then you have to meet the physical standards in order to get on scholarship and that is the objective. Savannah State is one of the only two universities under the university system of Georgia offering a graduate program in urban studies. I'm with Nicole at the Savannah State University radio station. She's going to tell us a little bit about what she does here. Tell me so you have a minor in, Mass communications. Okay so how did you get involved in that? I got a little spark and interest in the radio here on campus and I was listening to it while traveling to class and they made a call for students who wanted to volunteer to learn. And so I put in my application and within a week I had my own program. Wow! That's, [Inaudible]. A pretty unreal opportunity. Savannah State has 175 faculty members along with a low 18 to 1 student to faculty ratio. The teachers here work so good with the students and it's a little bit smaller classroom sizes so you get a little better one on one. And the level of knowledge that the teachers bring to the table here is phenomenal. I like how they give you their cell phone numbers. It's more personal. If I need anything, it doesn't matter, I can call them right then and there. And that's a really good thing. So if I need help with a test that's tomorrow, I can call my professors the night before and say, hey I don't understand this. That's convenient. The Savannah State Tigers play at the NCAA Division I level and participate in football, baseball, basketball, cross country, tennis, track and field, volleyball, golf and softball. Savannah State gives students the opportunity to stay close to class and the professors with five different on-campus residence options. My experience living on campus has been an experience. I almost want to say I'm on vacation. I really like it. The dorms are nice, it's spacious. It's more like an apartment than it is an actual dorm. We don't have to walk down the hallway to get to the bathroom. Your bathroom's right there in the room with you and that was like a big plus for me. You want to get involved outside the classroom? Savannah State offers more than 75 clubs, organizations, student publication, honoraries, sororities and fraternities and intramural sports. If you have a love for the ocean like me, be sure to check out the state's marine bio program, which is only one of two in the entire state and the only one with ocean access. Because of our unique setting, we're located only about 12 miles from the Atlantic Ocean, we can access it by road as well as a tidal creek. We have a pier and dock on our campus and we have boats. And we even have a boat captain that takes students out around and we even offer wireless access to the internet so that when the students are on the beaches or on the waterways, they can connect to the university and send their research materials back. So if you're looking for a university with unique programs and research opportunities, you might want to get on board with Savannah State University. Well that is it for us here in Savannah Georgia. Thanks so much for joining us on our tour of Savannah State University. We'll see you guys next time! [ Music ]
