Hey [laughter] you're such a goof. I'm Ferrari St. Paul and this is Youniversity TV where we put you in university. Today we're here at Pitt State University, home of the gorillas. [laughter] Come and join Gus and I are our trek through the Pitt State jungle. Let's go Gus.
Pittsburg State is located in Pittsburg, Kansas which is a college town of about 20,000 located less than two hours from the major metropolitan areas of Kansas City and Tulsa.
Pittsburg is a great town in my opinion. It's not too big but it's also not too small. This town is based on this college. Everyone is involved in the college. Everyone supports the college. We have so many programs throughout our town that promote Pittsburg State.
The Pittsburg State campus covers 443 attractive well kept acres and its 54 major buildings reflect both the University's 100 year history and its modern high tech programs. [music]
We are state of the art, I mean you can't go into a business and find more current technology than what we are blessed with out at the technology center. It's absolutely amazing when you're walking through the halls and see what's going on. The wow factor is there.
Pittsburg State University enrolls over 7,000 students, around 5,800 of which are undergraduates. The student body is even with 50% men to 50% women and minority students make up about 13% of the population.
Being admitted to Pittsburg State it's expected that a student achieve a 21 ACT score or higher, SAT of 980 or higher, get the rank in the top 3rd of their high school graduating class. If they have a 2.0 grade point average in the Kansas Regents Core Curriculum and that's for in state students. For out of state students we require a 2.5 grade point average in the Kansas Regents Core Curriculum.
Tuition for Kansas residents is a great value at just over $4,500 per year. For out of stater's tuition runs at just under $13,000 per year and room and board for all students adds about another $5,700 per year. Pittsburg State University offers more than 100 undergraduate academic programs and more than 50 graduate programs. With an average undergraduate class size of 20, students are able to get the most out of their education.
Pitt State technology found many students in a top professional. In your class students to can learn to [inaudible] to stay in this field.
Some of the most popular majors include engineering technology, elementary education, biology, nursing and management marketing and in case you didn't know, PSU is recognized by the state of Kansas as the center of excellence for technology.
Penn State technology students know the formula for success. Students built this formula one car for top competition. In the race for tech jobs, college and technology students finish ahead. Nearly 100% of students are employed before they even graduated.
Pittsburg State University has nearly 300 fulltime faculty members, 79% of which hold a PHD or the highest degree in their field. Pittsburg state also features a comfortable 18 to 1 student to faculty ratio.
On game day fans go ape in gorilla village. Tailgaters party here before the gorilla's play in the jungle. Eleven gorilla teams compete at the division II level in the Mid America Intercollegiate Athletics Association.
In 2004 we went to the National Championship and I think that was just a great year all around. That group of guys was really tight knit and we were a family and ever since that we've always been a family. The football team has really changed my life. It's taught me everything.
Six residents halls offer students wishing to live on campus the best in furnished living options, complete with all the conveniences students expect, an indoor pool, indoor and outdoor tracks, and campus television and radio stations are just a few of the many things available to Pittsburg State Students.
We have an office on campus called the Campus Activity Center who helps to arrange a variety of activity for students. We also have over 150 student organizations.
In addition [inaudible] and more than 150 clubs ranging from religious to political to service, give students plenty of opportunity to get involved. Here's some interesting trivia for you, did you know that Pittsburg State is the home of two Pulitzer Prize winners and a Fulbright Scholar faculty member?
We've got Pitt State grads that are in charge of the new Chrysler now. We've had one of our Pitt State graduates, one of the only grads not from Japan, that made it to the board on Toyota. The President of the North American division of Honda Motor Company is a Pitt State Grad. The president and CEO of Wal-Mart, a little company out of Arkansas, is a Pitt State grad. So we have had a lot of success with our students getting out and doing great things.
In fact, faculty members hold patent's for major research breakthroughs in biology and/or chemistry and PSU's polymer research center won the 2007 Presidential Green Chemistry Challenge award in the designing greener chemicals category.
