Hey, what's up, I'm Ferrari St. Paul, and this is YOUniversity TV, where we put "you" in "university." Today we're here at the University of Houston, home of the Cougars. Come join us on our tour. U of H is located right in the heart of Houston, Texas, the nation's fourth largest city and the energy capital of the world. Good location. I would say it's really good for any field that you want to go in. There are a ton of retail industries, as specifically for me, but not only for my major, you know, medical, we have the largest medical center in the nation, those students studying pre-med, medicine. We have Fortune 500 companies here, forty of them in Houston as well. So there's lots of different opportunities going on. UH's 550-acre campus features lush green manicured lawns, tree-filled parks, and fountains, as well as sculptures and buildings designed by renowned artists and architects. The student body at Houston has about 35,000 undergraduate and graduate students. Students come from 130 nations, and I bet you didn't know that with a diversity rate of better than 61%, Houston is the second most ethnically diverse major research university in the United States. Student body's very diverse. It's a melting pot, basically, um. There's students from every ethnicity. I had friends from Ethiopia, I had friends from Nigeria. We have different religions, different cultural backgrounds, so when you come to UH, you get a real world education. In order to be automatically admitted to the University of Houston, you must have graduated in the top 20 percentile of your high school class, or ranked in the top 50% of your high school class, and have a minimum score of 1000 on the SATs. If you don't meet one of those top two requirements, we have something called "individual review," where we look at, um, the holistic picture, everything that makes up the student beyond their academics. If you're wondering how much to budget for the next school year, tuition including room and board for Texas residents runs about $15,000 per year. That figure for out-of-staters is just under $21,000 per year. With more than 100 majors and minors offered, UH students have educational options. The university also offers more than 130 Master's and over 50 doctoral and three professional degree programs. Some even rank among the best in the nation. The entrepreneurship program in the College of Business has been ranked first in the nation. The Hilton Hotel, um, is student run, faculty and staff as well, and two restaurants are there. At U of H, a bright future is in sight. The university is home to the only optometry school in the state. Let's put my eyes to the test. The University of Houston employs some very renowned professors, including ones that find the opportunities to still conduct world-class research, such as working toward early detection of heart attack risk and developing a technology that brings dead oil wells back to life. The high quality faculty that are here, that are conducting research, they're teaching-- They're very approachable, you can go to them when you need anything. We try and, try and make the experiences in lab where they ultimately of course they have to learn and understand the chemistry concept. But we try and make it as fun as possible, so they'll blow a few things up, they'll get lots of color changes going on. If you love sports, check out the 14 Cougar athletic teams that compete at the division I level in the conference USA. They have won over 50 NCAA individual championships. They've also played in 17 bowl games, appeared in five NCAA final fours in men's basketball, and earned a berth to the College World Series. Whew! In addition, UH has more than 648 All-America Award winners, and 33 Olympic medalists. I did it, take it, Shasta! I'm in here in the rec center pumping iron with Shasta the Cougar. He's in here all the time getting ready for his touchdown rituals. Ready to share some Cougar passion? If so, you're sure to find a match among UH's 250-plus clubs, fraternities and sororities, leadership programs, and other groups. It is easy to get involved, um. We have a very spirited campus. I love intramurals. I think it's a great way to get the students that don't want to play on the D1 sport, that can, we can all play in a league that, you know, is fun, people show up, very competitive. Over 300-plus activities and organizations here on campus that you can get involved with. Thinking of making Houston your home? UH has 4,000 students who live in on-campus dorms, apartments, and townhouses, which feature everything from traditional single or double style dorm rooms, to suite-style halls. And fully-furnished on-campus apartments. Dorm life at U of H was really fun, my freshman year, like I said, I'm from Florida, I didn't know anyone, and I got here, and I made a ton of friends instantly. It's exciting, you always have something to do, always someone to talk to, it was really awesome, and I enjoyed it. Did you know that UH alumni have done everything from walking in space to leading major corporations? In fact, famous University of Houston alums include everyone from actors Dennis and Randy Quaid, athletes like Clyde Drexler, Hakeem Olajuwon, and Carl Lewis, and newsman Dan Rather, and the list goes on and on. So if you're looking for a school with years of tradition to go along with a great education, then be sure to put the University of Houston on your college list. Thanks for joining us here in Houston, Texas on our tour of the University of Houston. I'm Ferrari St. Paul. Peace out from H-town.
