Welcome to the University of Maryland Eastern Shore. The University of Maryland Eastern Shore is located in the small town of Princess Anne on the eastern shore of Maryland. The quiet community is only a three hours drive from Washington D.C., Baltimore, Philadelphia and Virginia Beach. Plus the state's infamous seaside resort of Ocean City is only one hour from campus. We have very identifiable seasons. That is you have a fairly mild winter season. On occasion we'll get a little snow. You're more likely to see nice hot summers though here. One of the biggest attractions, of course, is Ocean City, Maryland which is not even 20 minutes away. The big beach and clubs and things of that nature and then Baltimore is also a hop, skip, and jump away. But just up the road is Salisbury, Maryland. Movie theatres, malls, all the lures of the inner city, it's not too far. Maryland's campus is 745 acres large, including a 350-acre research and teaching farm, one recognized by the National Professional Grounds Management Society as the second most beautiful campus in the United States for two consecutive years. UMES is located in a very rural, quiet, idyllic setting. The landscaping here is just immaculate. UMES is home to over 4,000 students, from 34 states and 41 countries. 39% of the student body is male, 61% are female, and 39% are first-generation college students. It's like a home away from home and it's small as opposed to those larger universities. It's very personal and you'll always have someone to talk to when you're having problems. For students applying to UMES, it's good to know priority is given to applicants with GPA of at least 2.5, a composite SAT score of at least 1250, or an ACT of 18. We look more at the grade point average than anything. We give students a chance because that's pretty much, you know, their resume there. We also look at what they've done extracurricular wise. So like our President says is that we're in the business of making good better and great greater. The average cost for a full time student tuition and fees for those who live in-state is about $6,000. Those coming from out-of-state will pay close to $13,000 and room and board will cost between $5,000 and $7,000. Tuition is really, really great especially for if you're kind of in a financial bound, this is a really great University to look at. Maryland Eastern Shore offers 32 undergraduate majors, 10 Masters, and 6 Doctoral programs. Some student favorites are biology, criminal justice, business administration, sociology, and human ecology. Our DPT program. which is the Doctorate of Physical Therapy, it's one of the nation's most highly ranked programs. They have a 100% pass-rate for their Boards. In other words, the graduates of their program are exceedingly well trained. They end up having no difficulty at all finding employment when they graduate. ES is the 20th university in the nation certified by the PGA to offer its Professional Golf Management program. Most importantly, it's the first historically black institution with this distinction. We'll be, I think, only the second school in the country that will have sequential art in the fall and sequential art used to be called comic book illustration. And there's a great demand for that and we're very excited to have the program here. Maryland employs about 200 full-time faculty members, more than half are tenured or on the tenured track. Their student to faculty ratio is 25:1. My professors are really cool. Me being an aviation science major, a lot of them are ex-military and ex-pilots and things like that. So they're all really cool guys. They're always there to lend a helping hand. If you need extra help, come after school or come after class, talk with them, anything like that. The UMES Hawks compete in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference with a powerhouse of a women's bowling team. They were number one in the country, winning the 2008 NCAA Women's Bowling Championship. About 60% of Maryland students live on campus in one of the available 11 residence facilities, which include dorms and apartment style suites. For freshman year, I stayed in one of the newer dorms called Court Plaza. You have a roommate, you share a bathroom with about six guys, but everything is cool. Internet, TV, everything is provided. Everything is fully carpeted. It's a great-- it's a great facility. After that I stayed at Hawk's Landing. Hawk's Landing is more of an apartment style complex where you have a full kitchen and living room and you still share a room with a roommate, but you have your personal bathroom. Spanning 147,000 square-feet, the same size as two football fields, the Student Center was specifically designed as a one-stop shop. Students can enjoy the game room, dining hall, and even the bookstore. What more could you ask for? UMES is tied with Florida State for the most alumni appearing in a single Superbowl game. The game between New York Jets and the Baltimore Colts back in 1968 represented five UMES alumni, pretty impressive. When I graduate from University of Maryland Eastern Shore, the plan is to become a test pilot for NASA and initially, I'm probably gonna have to go into certified flight instructing. But coming out of UMES, I'll be perfectly ready for that. I already have my professional pilot's license. I'll have my instrument rating, commercial rating, and also certified flight instructor rating. So if you're looking for a university in a serene, beautiful, and safe environment, committed to leading students through discovery, then the University of Maryland Eastern Shore may just be the place to call home. Thanks for joining us at the University of Maryland Eastern Shore. I'm Levon Harvey for YOUniversity TV. Catch you later.
