What's up? I'm Ferrari St Paul, and this is YOUniversityTV where we put you, you, in university. Today we're here at the University of California Riverside, home of the Highlanders and their fearless leader Scotty the Bear. Whoo! The crowd goes wild! The University of California Riverside is located approximately 50 miles east of Los Angeles, California, within driving distance to Disneyland and Hollywood. In addition, it's only about an hour drive from the desert, the mountains, or the ocean, giving students plenty of activity options. This campus has a really great locational advantage. You can go to the beach. You can go snowboarding. You can go hiking, camping. There's a lot of great things in Riverside. UC Riverside is perched on 1200 park-like acres, near the Box Springs Mountains, which feature a 161 foot Carillon tower, the botanic gardens and acres of citrus groves. Need a change of scenery? Just a short walk away, UCR students have their own university village. You can catch the latest flick, grab a bite to eat, or shop the day away. Enrollment at UCR is nearly 17,000 students, with about 15,000 undergraduates and about 2,000 graduates. UC Riverside is also a diverse institution, and in fact, is ranked third in the nation in ethnic diversity. This is a campus with truly cultural diversity. So you get the chance to meet students from all very different kinds of background and interact with them. UC Riverside is the only UC school that reflects the population of California. So in essence, we are the most diverse, ethnically, campus in the UC system. Incoming freshmen who are California residents seeking admission to UC Riverside can be admitted in one of the three ways, which include meeting eligibility in the statewide context, meeting eligibility in the local context, or by examination alone. These paths to admission are explained in detail on the web at www.my.ucr.edu. We really do look at students holistically. We look at the whole package. We look at everything that they--the strength of their coursework, their extracurricular activities, their personal statement. We look at all of that when we're making the assessment of whether or not they have potential to come to our school and do well. Resident fees run about $3,000 per quarter, and include student health insurance along with other services. Room and board, books, and personal expenses are separate. If you want educational choices, UC Riverside has them, with 80 majors, 51 minors, and 44 master's programs, 40 PhD programs, and 17 state teaching credential programs to choose from. Some of the current favorite majors among students are biological sciences, business administration and psychology. We are one of the few UC's that offer a lot of undergraduate research opportunities for our students. And that's the thing, they're fanatical for their students. They want the students to succeed. I never knew as an undergrad you could do research, get to know faculty members, get letters of recommendation. There's a lot of great internships. UC Riverside has offered all of those to me. From grapefruit to naval oranges to golden nugget tangerines, over 900 different types of citrus fruits can be traced back to UCR. Riverside students and professors use these citrus groves as a working lab. The university's innovative research department has even been able to help create an efficient and clean way to turn waste materials into sulfur-free diesel fuel. How's this for impressive credentials? UCR has seven current and former faculty members who have been elected to the National Academy of Sciences, plus more than 50 UCR faculty members have received Guggenheim Fellowships for distinguished achievement and exceptional promise. We have really good professors, and I feel like they're very approachable. They have office hours in which they're just waiting for students to come and talk to them and ask them questions. And since we are a small university, I believe they're much more available to students. After just a few short years in the big West conference, the UC Riverside Highlanders are starting to make a name for themselves. In addition, 13 players have been drafted by major league baseball teams, and recently, had two Highlander athletes drafted by major league soccer. UC Riverside offers three housing styles to meet the comforts and needs of all students. You have your choice to live in the residence hall, in on campus apartments, or family housing, each providing a variety of activities and work-friendly atmosphere. I definitely suggest that everybody spends at least one year on campus. It keeps you close. Makes you really enrich your life as a student here. University of California offers nearly 300 clubs and organizations, including fraternities and sororities, for all students to get involved. They have academic based sororities and fraternities, and they have community service based sororities and fraternities. You always have a crowd to fit into. Time for the Wednesday Nooner. Every week there's music and sometimes even live performances here at the Carillon bell tower. Bet you didn't know the band No Doubt was once a Wednesday Nooner featured artist. So if an environmentally forward university that offers a strong education fits your idea of a great future, then be sure to look into the University of California Riverside. Thanks for joining us here in Riverside, California. I'm Ferrari St Paul, and goodbye from UCR. Who's side? R's side. Who's side? R's side.... Whooo!
