YOUniversity TV coming to you
from University of Maine

in Orono on the banks
of the Stillwater River.

U Maine is one of New England's
premier universities

which opened in 1868 and was
named one of the best colleges

in the U.S. for the third
consecutive year

by the Princeton Review.

The University of Maine
is located in Orono, Maine,

which is about a 15 minute
drive from Bangor,

the state’s third largest city.

Maine’s campus sits on
660 acres centrally located

in a beautiful rural
setting on the banks

of the Stillwater River
and close to the ocean

and the mountains, yet provides
close access to urban amenities.

At U Maine, you’ll enjoy
the world through

88 bachelor’s degree programs.

Their library is one of
the top ranked in the nation

and they have one of
the oldest and most prestigious

honors college programs.

The university enrolls 12,000
students from 48 states

and 66 countries.

Undergraduate enrollment at
the school is just under 10,000.

I feel that I’m getting
a very valuable education,

I feel like even
though I transferred

from a community college nothing
has been stunted and I feel like

I’m going right along
and I’m very well prepared

to go for a graduate degree.

Acceptance at the University
of Maine is relatively selective

as students are required
to take either the ACT or SAT

and provide grade transcripts
and an essay.

Tuition and fees for in-state
students run at about

$15,000 per year,
including room and board,

and about $20,000 per year
for out-of-state students.

If you’re looking
for degree choices,

the University of Maine
has you covered.

There are over 175 bachelor,
masters, and doctorate

degree programs to choose from.

In engineering, there are quite
a few resources available

that are organized both
by the college--

you know, the university,
I guess you could say--

but also the students
themselves organize

through some of the clubs
and student organizations

will organize tutoring sessions.

In some of the engineering
programs, cohort kind of

gels quite early.

So as a result, first year
students get to know each other

pretty quickly within
their discipline.

Some of the most popular majors
include business and commerce,

elementary education and
teaching, nursing, psychology,

and human development
and family studies.

Another unique feature
the University of Maine offers

is the opportunity
for undergraduates

to do research.

In fact, the school is ranked
in the top 8% nationally

by the Carnegie Foundation for
Research and Graduate Education.

So another thing that is
really exciting that U Maine

has for students is the
opportunity to get involved

in research.

And one of the things that is
great is that many institutions

are so big and so large that
the only research opportunities

go to the graduate students.

But at U Maine, we take pride
in the fact that we get

our undergraduates
involved in research.

It’s a chance for them to
work right alongside faculty

who are well known researchers.

Our professors are doing
cutting edge research

and our students
get involved,

and even sometimes get
involved in patent research,

get involved in doing
presentations

at national conferences
and seminars.

Sometimes they get cited
as a co-author or a researcher

on journal articles.

And that’s really exciting
when that happens

at the undergraduate level.

Maine has over 500
full time faculty members,

85% of which have a PhD
or terminal degree.

Plus, a 16:1
student to faculty ratio

ensures that Maine students
get great individual attention.

19 Black Bear athletic teams
compete at the NCAA

Division I level in
the America East Conference,

except for football, which plays
in the Atlantic 10 Conference.

University of Maine is the only
Division I level school

in the state, and the Black Bear
hockey team won the Division I

national championship
in 1993 and 1999.

In the event that University
of Maine makes it into

the Frozen Four at the end,
we tend to have a bonfire

depending on
the victory or loss.

Some years victory,
some years losses,

and it’s basically roped off,
it’s off to the side

of the mall where the library is
and they have a giant bonfire

probably 15, 20 feet high
and most of the university

turns out to celebrate
the accomplishments

of the hockey team
for that year.

The university's 19 residence
halls hold about a third

of the school’s students giving
those who live on campus

a chance to be close
to classes and activities

and make new friends.

I’ve lived on campus for
five years now so it’s been a,

it’s been a ride.

And I love living on campus
because you can meet

all sorts of people.

Everybody is always
right down the hall

and things are always
kind of going on.

There’s always something
new to do in the dorm.

I’ve been an RA for
the last two years,

and being an RA,
it's always great to kind of

see first year students
and see how people change

from year to year.

Having a lot of that contact
and just kind of participating

in different activities
and just seeing everybody

kind of grow and change
and you change as well.

There are over 200 organizations
that students can be a part of,

including an active
Greek life on campus.

I bet you didn’t know
that the Phi Kappa Phi

academic honor society
was founded right here

at the University of Maine.

Students can take advantage
of all the bare necessities

that this brand new
87,000 square foot

student recreation
center has to offer.

The university’s list
of alumni is scary,

including the master of horror
and the world’s best selling

author, Stephen King.

Other notable graduates include
Nobel Laureate Dr. Bernard Lown,

Senator Olympia Snow,
and NHL star Paul Kariya.

If you’re looking for a highly
regarded school that is known

for its research and gives
students the opportunity

to get hands-on experience
while still in school,

be sure to check out
the University of Maine today.

It’s been great
being here at U Maine.

We hope you enjoyed
our campus tour.

I’m Chloe, see you soon.
