Hey, what’s up? I’m Nicole Aaron and this is YOUniversity TV, where we put you in university. Today we’re at Lincoln, Nebraska which is one of the largest college cities in the Midwest. You may be surprised to learn that Nebraska is also a major research university and offers all of the benefits and opportunities of a large school, but with a comparatively smaller student population. The University of Nebraska is located in the heart of Lincoln, which has a population of about 250,000. This scenic campus sits on over 600 beautiful acres and has actually won awards for its landscaping. Nebraska has a student population of just over 22,000 with more than 17,000 undergrads. More than 25% of the students come from outside the state. The student body is diverse as well, with all 50 states and 110 countries being represented on campus. Minority students make up 11% of the population. Before there were students, there were mammoths. Archie is just one of them. Mammoths roamed the campus more than 10,000 years ago. Freshmen seeking admission to the University of Nebraska need to score at least a 20 on the ACT or a 950 on the SAT. Some programs may require students to have slightly higher test scores or to have taken additional college prep classes. We have a, what we call a rolling admissions process. So it’s not competitive to just generally get into the university; if you have the right courses and the right academic preparation, you will get in. And we make sure that students of all abilities are successful here. If you struggle in chemistry, there’s the chemistry resource center. If you struggle at writing there's the writing resource lab. If you are a high ability student there is the university honors program, which is gonna kind of take it up a notch for you. Tuition including room and board runs about $13,000 per year for in-state students and about $23,000 for out-of-state students. There are over 275 programs and 150 different majors offered at the University of Nebraska. The most popular majors include business administration, psychology, finance, family and consumer sciences, and marketing. Here at the University of Nebraska we have a special program called UCARE. It’s Undergraduate Creative Research Activities and Experiences, and that allows students to partner with faculty members to work on their research projects. And so I have students that are working on greenhouse projects, identifying the plant material that has resistance to going into the lab. There are over 1,200 full time faculty members at the University of Nebraska, and with a low 16:1 student to faculty ratio, students are able to get individual attention. I don’t think there’s any other college in the country that does the depth of reporting projects that students here have the opportunities to do. In the six years that we have done depth reports, two of those student projects have been nominated for Pulitzer Prizes. Two have been nominated for Student Academy Awards. So they really represent, probably the pinnacle of student achievement in journalism. Cornhusker athletes have a reputation for both academics and athletics, boasting over 250 Academic All-Americans, which is regarded as the most prestigious athletic award in the country. Teams compete at the Division I level in the Big 12 Conference and have won 23 national championships, including five in football alone since 1970. Picture this. 81,000 screaming Cornheads inside Memorial Stadium. Every Husker football game since 1962 has been sold out, and that’s an NCAA record. 17 different residence halls are available to students. With conveniences like cable, phone, and internet, they can stay connected to their friends both on and off campus. The dorms are really nice, the staff is so friendly. I remember last year we had a snow day and so all the classes were canceled and the staff who works the dorms still came in and made food for us so we wouldn’t have to, like, venture out in the snow to get food. They really make it feel like home. From movies, museums, and great restaurants to over 400 student organizations, there’s plenty of great things for Nebraska students to do. Greek life, which includes 35 fraternities and sororities, plays a huge role on campus, as almost 20% of students are members. Homecoming week is always fun week and they put you with different fraternities and sororities and it really strengthens the university, not only the Greek system, but the students that live in the residence halls or are involved in different organizations, they get to go too. Here’s some interesting trivia for ya. Did you know that late night television legend Johnny Carson and billionaire investor Warren Buffet both went to Nebraska? Nebraska also has cutting edge research in science and medicine with some fascinating inventions like the safer barrier used in NASCAR and Indy Car races to protect drivers from crashes. And the current development of miniature robots that can be placed inside the body and perform surgery. You’re probably wondering why I’m dressed like this. Well actually, I’m standing in the lab of an underground bunker. You are looking at one of the world's largest lasers. This laser is designed to detect nuclear weapons before they enter the U.S. If you’re looking for a modern Midwest university that features cutting edge research and facilities while maintaining the traditional college feel, you’ll probably want to consider the University of Nebraska. Thanks for joining us in Lincoln, Nebraska on our tour of UNL. We’ll see ya real soon.
