Hey guys, I'm Ferrari St. Paul.

Today our tour begins where
the University of South Carolina

got its start.

Welcome to the historic
horseshoe,

home to the school's
original campus.

The University of South Carolina
is located in the capital city

of Columbia, South Carolina,
with a mild climate that allows

for year round kayaking,
canoeing or fishing

in one of the three rivers
that flow through the city.

Or swimming or waterskiing in
the nearby 50,000-acre lake.

There's lots of things to do.

We've great venues for concerts
and cultural events.

A great downtown
area for restaurants

and other activities.

On campus, you have things
like Late Night Carolina.

You have concerts and comedians
that come in for students to go

watch on campus.

And you also have
things off campus.

We have a really great mall
here, movie theaters,

skating rinks.

South Carolina's 350-acre
flagship campus in Columbia

features 19th Century
architecture combined

with modern facilities
and lush landscaping

in an urban setting.

Columbia's less than
a two hour drive

from the Blue Ridge Mountains
and the beaches

of the South Carolina coast.

The University of South Carolina
is an eight campus system.

On the Columbia campus,
there are nearly 20,000

undergraduates.

Fifty-five percent are female,
forty-five percent are male,

and the student to faculty
ratio is 17:1.

Just kind of a wonderful
opportunity for students

to interact with so many
different people.

Representing 50 states
and 102 different countries,

with great, not only locals,
but students from representing

all across the United States.

All freshmen applicants with
a 3.0 or better high school

GPA and a 1000
or higher on the SAT

are considered for admission.

We do use a process
called holistic review.

So what that means is we first
and foremost look at SAT

and ACT scores and grades.

But after that, we really look
at the whole individual.

We want to see what students
have been involved in

in high school, you know,
what community service.

Also, any work experience.

So we really look at
the whole student.

Tuition and fees for in-state
students is around $9,000,

while those coming
from out of state

will pay closer to $23,000.

Room and board cost
less than $6,000.

And more than 90% of
undergraduates receive

financial aid or a scholarship.

South Carolina is the national
leader in fuel cell research.

You are looking at the nation's
only industry-university

cooperative research
program for fuel cells.

Just think, these fuel cells may
someday be used to power

cars, laptop computers and more.

Undergraduate students at
South Carolina have the choice

of nearly 80 degree programs.

Some favorites among students
are business, psychology,

sport management,
engineering, and journalism.

Well, actually, last year I was
a college correspondent for CNN.

That gave me a unique
opportunity to make news videos

about USC and they'd
play it on CNN.com.

They also took me to Atlanta,
and I got to tour the center

and everything, and I
thought that was

a very unique experience.

Students can also take advantage
of the university's strong

study abroad program.

One of my favorite classes
was History 106.

It's African Studies.

And so it kind of developed
my lead into study abroad

my sophomore year to learn
about Africa and then be able

to travel over there.

Interested in conducting
business beyond the US?

South Carolina has a top ranked,
undergraduate international

business program.

Students can study, intern,
or work all around the world.

If you're a smart cookie,
the prestigious South Carolina

Honors College offers intensive
versions of many required

undergraduate courses with
nearly 300 unique options,

like American Student Activism,
and Zen and the Art

of Everything.

We have the Honors College,
and I worked with a lot

of Honors College students.

And mostly the students I
worked with, it's for research.

So they might do an independent
study with me or work study--

work study program.

The University of South Carolina
has more than 1,700 full-time

faculty members.

Ninety-nine percent have a PhD
or terminal degree.

The students will be learning
with faculty not only who know

how to teach new information
but who are also creating it.

I think the Carolina experience
isn't only about working with

fine teachers, which we have,
of course, but also with fine

scholars and researchers.

Because of the depth and quality
of its research work,

the university has received
the highest designation

awarded by the Carnegie
Foundation.

Carolina students also win
a strong share of nationally

competitive scholarships
and fellowships,

like the Roth, Fulbright,
Truman, and Goldwater.

The South Carolina Gamecocks
compete in the Division One

level in the Southeastern
Conference, the baseball team

has frequented the World Series,
the women's track and field

and equestrian team have enjoyed
national champion status.

And even Cocky the mascot
has won national titles.

Before I came to school,
I was not really into sports.

Now I'm like one of
the biggest football fans

and basketball fans.

There's nothing like your first
Gamecocks football game.

It is truly a remarkable
experience.

The University of South Carolina
has 23 residence halls

in traditional, suites,
and apartment styles.

And you can join a community
hall interest,

like the environmentally
friendly, honors, athletic,

premedical, or engineering.

At the University
of South Carolina,

15% of students go Greek.

Greek Village is home to 20
sorority and fraternity houses.

Think about it, you could join
Alpha Seta Omega,

Sigma Alpha Epsilon,
Sigma Nu,

the possibilities are endless.

There are nearly 300 student
clubs and organizations,

outstanding fitness facilities,
and plenty of entertainment

and cultural events.

Excellent academics,
endless opportunities,

and palm trees,
all in the same place?

Sounds to me like you
might want to check out

the University of South Carolina
in Columbia.

I'm Ferrari St. Paul with
YOUniversity TV.

See you later.
