Hey, guys, Sheana for YOUniversity TV here. Welcome to Saint Mary's College of Maryland, in sight of the English colony in 1634, the fourth oldest settlement in America. Okay, I'm done. Could somebody please let me out? Saint Mary's College of Maryland is located in Saint Mary's City, Maryland, just 75 miles south of Washington, DC, on the Saint Mary's River right off the Chesapeake Bay. Saint Mary's College of Maryland has a beautiful waterfront campus. Here at the boathouse, students can check out a kayak, they can go windsurfing, or if it's a beautiful day, they can lay out on the deck. The saying is, "You can't graduate from Saint Mary's without knowing how to sail," so I took that to heart, and I went and I registered for a class, so now I'm sailing, I actually got to sail for the first time the other day, which was awesome, um, but no, the water's awesome, it's a really beautiful, beautiful location of a school. And we just have the chance to, like, go and chill out by the waterfront whenever you want, just to-- you can have bonfires by the point, um, just hang out with friends by the water, and it's open to all students, even if you don't know how to sail. Saint Mary's enrolls about 1,950 undergrads. 22% are first generation college students, and 23% are from out of state or international. 55% of the student body is female, 45% male, and 24% are of diverse backgrounds. I just love how open everyone is, and friendly. I love how involved the school allows you to get. Last year I went on the Habitat for Humanity trip to Georgia, which was so much fun. And it's really just opened my mind to a lot of different things. All students at Saint Mary's are honors students, so it's clear that their admission requirements are highly selective. SAT scores for the middle 50% of the entering class range from 1740 to 2010. Or between 26 and 30 on the ACT. We're looking for students that are gonna make an impact. And that impact is something where they show us that they have great character, they can be a citizen of this campus. We're not looking for a list of different things you've been involved in, we're looking for you to tell us why you've been involved in them. Why they define you. And how you see your role going forward with those things. If you're a resident of Maryland, you'll pay about $13,000 a year in tuition. Those coming from out of state will pay closer to $24,000. And all students will pay around $9,500 towards room and board. Saint Mary's College offers bachelor's degrees in more than twenty disciplines. Psychology, English, Political Science, and Biology are among student favorites. Now, this isn't playtime, these genetics students are learning the three dimensional nature of mitosis and meiosis. They have the ability to work in, uh, multiple lab settings with research grade equipment. In many cases, the students work outside so that they're not physically in the classroom when we have our laboratories. And in fact, they go out, they can paint themselves for some experiments. 99% of the tenured and tenure-track faculty have a terminal degree. Students can expect faculty who really want to be here. You know, most of the faculty come and they stay, so they love it. And they like teaching at a place where they can have really close classroom relationships with students so the classes are small, they get to really get to know their students, um, and challenge them, and help them grow and develop all the way through college. Classrooms and our, our laboratories, and our offices are always open so that we like to be on campus. It's a beautiful environment and the students realize that. They come into our offices, they see us after hours, in fact we even have a faculty intramural team that plays with the students, you know, after hours in all of the different sports during the year. The Saint Mary Seahawks compete at the NCAA division III level, and are recognized for their nationally ranked varsity sailing team, and for the men's varsity basketball team. So, can you tell me a little about being on the crew team? Um, well, I get up at 4:45 every morning, and I'm down at the waterfront around 5:15, and we spend about an hour and a half in the morning, every morning, out on the river. And I get to watch the sun rise every morning, which is one of my favorite parts. Do you guys compete? Yes, um we compete, um, in the mid-Atlantic and we'll go up to Philadelphia, and a lot of our races are in Virginia and Maryland. First year students live in traditional residence halls, while most upper classmen choose to live in on-campus apartments, townhouses, and suites. Check this out, just like a real house. Hey, you want to show me around? Absolutely. All right. Saint Mary's College hosts more than 100 student-run SGA-sponsored clubs. We have tons of campus programming. Every Thursday night's the open mic night. There's a comedian series throughout the semester. They're bringing lecturers down. Last semester Tom Brokaw from NBC, Maureen Dowd from The New York Times, and a number of people came down to give lectures at this campus. Or they're just doing, you know, fun stuff down on the waterfront, on the campus center patio, um, there's always gonna be World Carnival in the spring, where they bring tons of bands from off-campus, you know, celebrating diversity in all of its forms. We also are connected intimately to historic Saint Mary's City, which was the first capital of Maryland. And so we have students here who, uh, who work on the anthropological digs, um, that are taking place. Grab a seat, literally. Students at Saint Mary's are known to pull their couches onto the track for games. So grab your chips and salsa, and become a couch creature. So if you don't want to find yourself up the creek without a paddle, throw yourself into the mix, soak up the knowledge and tradition, and become a success at the Public Honors College, Saint Mary's College of Maryland. So, thanks for joining me here at Saint Mary's College of Maryland, where all students are honors students. I'm Shana, see you soon!
