What's up guys, YouniversityTV welcomes you to Honolulu, Hawaii. Today, we're at Chaminade University. I'm Nicole Erin. And I'm Sheana Jeanne. Aloha. Chaminade University of Honolulu resides in the one and only Honolulu, Hawaii. Chaminade is on the hillside of the historic Kaimuki District, two miles from Waikiki Beach. Chaminade's major buildings are distinctive for their red roofs, Mediterranean styles and corridors displaying art ways. Chaminade's beautiful campus boasts plenty of indigenous plant life like sugarcane, but it is also filled with plumeria and bougainvillea. The average temperature in Hawaii is in the low to mid-80's. During the winter months, it rarely dips below 70. With weather like this, you never have to leave the beach. Besides all the beautiful beaches, there's a lot of cultural aspects to the island. There's the Polynesian Cultural Center and luaus that you can go to. Right next to our school is Diamond Head and I've hiked that maybe ten times. You can walk right up to it and I've actually been to the middle of the island to this waterfall that and it's really pretty. You can climb up to the top of the waterfall. The U.S. News and World Report ranked Chaminade among the top three colleges in diversity. CU enrolls about 3,000 students each year, 69 % female and 31% male with an average class size of 18. Huge diversity of students. I mean, today in class we were going over the islands of Oceania and we had students from Palau, which is the farthest island west in the Pacific, farther west than Tokyo. And I've had a student from Ueno, which is an island about 3.5 square miles. Yeah, and I've had more than one student -- two actually from Ueno and I have a student from Tahiti in the class today, a student from Yap, a student from the East Coast, and students from California. For admission, Chaminade requires a minimum GPA of 2.25 and an SAT score of at least 900 or an ACT of 19. All students will pay about $16,000 in tuition per year. Room and board will be an additional $10,000. If you have a good high school GPA and you are an incoming freshman, your tuition is effectively reduced by the amount of merit awards you receive, which are based solely on your high school GPA. Chaminade offers three bachelor's degrees and 22 undergraduate majors, 5 graduate degree programs and several professional certificate programs. Forensic science, criminal justice, pre-health science and environmental studies are most popular among the students' majors. We are going to go to an island up of Oahu called Mokuauia, which is a small island that used to be a fishing village. We take care, we take out non-native plants, pick up trash, plant native plant. We are working on restoring a Hawaiian fishpond that's out there that is a way that Hawaiians had of sustainability of harvesting fish where little fish would swim in and as they grew inside the pond they couldn't get out, so no one could harvest them. And then the pond has been overgrown by a tree mangrove, which is a native to Hawaii. So, Chaminade has the job of pulling the mangrove out. This is out third and final trip, so we think we might be able to finish it up now. The Chaminade faculty works side-by-side with students to create connections with people in the community. There are over 30 Marianists brothers and priests who live on the campus. Some of the brothers served the university as administrators, professors and campus ministers and all serve to guide and support students educationally as well as spiritually. There are 82 fulltime faculty members with a student to faculty ratio of 16 to 1. A lot of professors I have I consider them as like one of my friends and occasionally I do hang out with a few professors outside of the school. The Silverswords compete the NCAA Division II level in the PacWest Conference. Chaminade is the only Division II School in the Maui Invitational Men's Basketball Tournament, which they also host. Whoa, watch out. You could be one of the 418 students who call Chaminade University's residential communities home sweet home. Living on campus is more than just having a place to sleep and study. Your room or apartment will be the place to develop friendships, plan and participate in events, take on new responsibilities and have some fun. From dorming I've met a lot of great friends that are still my friends today and we've developed solid relationships. It's just basically the friendship and the networking you gain from the dorm experience is very valuable. It's great to have and so. Chaminade University of Honolulu offers many organizations and activities on campus. Like casino night, barbeque, cultural dance and music events, even ping-pong tournaments. You're sure to find something just for you. Chaminade has a Pacific Island Review that we have every year and that we invite all the pacific island clubs to come and do song and dance. So, we have the Samoan Club, the Filipino Club, the Hawaiian Club, they all do their native song and dance. We have a big luau. All the students are invited and it's a good way for students who have never been to Hawaii and experience island culture, to experience island culture, island food and it's a good way for Hawaii kids to experience other cultures, other pacific island cultures as well. You even have the opportunity to learn from great professors like Lee Goff, the chair of Chaminade's forensic science program. He is a consultant for the CBS's hit drama CSI and its spin-off series. Plus, he leads a program on insects' forensics right on campus. So, if you are looking for a school that offers a rich learning environment with a dedicated involved faculty, small class sizes in a safe beautiful campus, maybe Chaminade University of Honolulu is for you. Mahalo. Thanks for joining us here today. Hope you guys enjoyed your tour of Chaminade University. We'll see you next time. I think it's time to go out some surfers, Waikiki. Let's go.
