What's up University TV watchers? I'm Ferrari and this is Nicole. That's right. We will be your hosts tonight at Eastern New Mexico University. That's right were located in Portola, New Mexico and were going to take a tour of this campus right after I get Ferrari back for doing that. [ Laughing ] Portales is a smaller town. A little smaller than what I'm used to, but I really like the small town atmosphere because the people in town are just like the people on campus their really helpful and so everyone's really nice. You go to Wal-Mart and you see people you don't know and you have a conversation with them so. ENMU sits on a nicely land landscaped 40 acre campus with modern buildings. Well, the weather in New Mexico is absolutely crazy one day it will be freezing, and then two hours later you'll have to turn on the air conditioner because it's hot. Kind of dry sometimes, close proximity to the dessert. But then at the same time if you just travel about four hours you got mountains, you have snow, you have ski resorts, different things like that. So there's a large variety of different kinds of climates. I met so many people all ready today and they're all from different states. Yeah, well I met this girl named Cici [assumed spelling] and she told me that students come from 45 states and 20 countries. No. Yeah. Look there's Cici now. You can talk to her for yourself. Hi. How are you doing? Good. Cici this is Ferrari. Hi. Nice to meet you. H Cici. How big are your classes? Well, it varies but the average class size is 22, and the teacher to student ratio is 16 to 1 so. So, is it pretty small, pretty cozy? Oh Yeah. One of my classes last year psychological statistics, there was only six of us. [ Music ] About 4300 students attend Eastern New Mexico. They have a fabulous full time faculty over 90% have a doctoral or terminal degree. [ Music ] First, you need a grade point average of 2.5 or higher an ACT score of 17 or a SAT score of at least 840 to be considered for admissions. In state students can expect to pay about $3,400 a year in tuition and fees. Out of state about $9,000 and room and board is another $6,200 a year. ENMU offers more than 60 associate, bachelors and masters degrees. [ Music ] Good evening, Portales, I'm Ferrari San Paul [assumed spelling]. And I'm Nicole Aaron. Coming to you from student run regional newscast News 3 New Mexico. Tonight we are talking about ENMU?s popular majors. Such as business, biology, criminal justice, communication and education. And one of my favorites that we will touch base on tonight is forensics science. That's right for all of you CSI fans out there you can take part in this program at Eastern's campus. There are only twenty in the nation. Now to Bob with weather. And after Weather you'll see Ferrari and I on location in a forensics science lab. I teach students how to distinguish between animal bones and human bones. I teach them how to study human skeleton, whether in a forensics context or in an archeology context and determine the age, and the sex, and if the person had any diseases. In a forensics context, what you know might have contributed to their death or what might have happened around that time so all of those things. And there, it's a fun class to teach because I like studying bones, and its real hands on. So the students learn very practical skills from these classes They get to work equipment, they get to actually do experiments. They really get that engaged learning experience because they get the chance to do that sometimes as early as freshmen and that's just not something you see at bigger universities. The ENMU Greyhounds [inaudible] compete in the NCAA lone star conference as a division 2 university. I absolutely love this school and it's crazy because you go to games and there are people like the typical college football guys will have their whole body painted with the letters on their chest and screaming and yelling. [ Music ] Students get to choose from three residence halls and three apartment complexes. And for those that are lucky enough to live in San Juan Village their able to take advantage of this awesome clubhouse complete with a kitchen, a mini movie theater, a pool table, a swimming pool, a fitness center, and the lovely living room and dining room area that we've all been enjoying. Do you live on campus? Yes I do. I actually live in the San Juan apartments, and it's really good. I have two other roommates and we have an open bedroom. Is really nice, you get the home feel of living off campus, but you're actually on campus. And you're able to get to your classes when you sleep in. Exactly. What's next? Well, I wanted to check out clubs and organizations on campus. Oh, like the fraternities and sororities. Yeah. And intramurals. Yep. And also, chamber singers but I don't know where they are. Choir room? [inaudible]. I guess. [inaudible]. [ Music ] [ Singing ] [ Laughter ] [ Inaudible ] Well, our tour here is complete at Eastern New Mexico University. As you can see, we made tons of friends. [ Laughter ] Here on campus, I'm really sad to go. I think it's definitely time a smoothie I think we should go down to Ground Zero. You could even get some coffee if you want to. All right, sounds good. [ Rock music ]
