We're here at Western Kentucky University, home of the Hilltoppers. Western Kentucky was ranked 16 by US News and World Report in the 2006 top 25 public universities. Masters in the South, Western Kentucky University is a public university overlooking the city of Bowling Green, Kentucky, which is roughly an hour north of Nashville, Tennessee and two hours south of Louisville, Kentucky and has a population of over 60,000. WKU's main campus sits on 200 picturesque acres, with views of the city and the Baron River basin and is considered by many to be one of the most beautiful campuses in the country. The university enrolls more than 19,000 students, and its undergraduate enrollment is the second largest in the state. The student body here at WKU is very diverse. We are about 60/40 women to men, and we have a large number of international students here. We're constantly pursuing study abroad opportunities for our students, as well as bringing international students to this campus. And we have about-- about 70% of our students are from the Kentucky area. The most recent average high school GPA for freshmen is above 3.1 and the average ACT score is 21. For the Fall of 2006, Western Kentucky accepted 91% of the nearly 7,000 freshmen who applied. Tuition at Western Kentucky runs just under $6,000 per year for Kentucky residents and about $14,000 for non-residents. Room and board for all students runs about $5,400 per year. Western Kentucky University offers 88 majors and 57 minors along with 18 associate degree programs, and the average class size is 26 students. The most popular majors include Elementary Education, Nursing, Management, Psychology, and Broadcasting. Internships are very easy to come by. One reason is we've been at this since 1939. Our first course was a radio production course. Since then, we've had people graduating obviously and getting jobs. So we have a vast alumni network out there. One of the most notable programs that Western Kentucky University offers is their journalism program, which consistently ranks in the top four nationally in the Hearst Journalism Awards program. I pretty much knew I wanted to come to Western to begin with because of its journalism and broadcasting program. It's top in the nation. And I want to have my own magazine, like I said. So that's my number one goal. Western Kentucky University employs nearly 700 full-time faculty members and more than 73% hold a PhD or the highest degree in their field. That number rises to 98% when you include part-time faculty. I've been privileged to work for a number of universities, and I chose to work here at WKU because the faculty are genuinely invested in their students and in each other. That means that we truly collaborate with each other across the disciplines and seek to find the very best learning situation for each of our students. The Hilltoppers compete at the NCAA Division I level in the Sun Belt Conference with 18 men's and women's sports teams. In fact, the football team played their very first season in Division I in 2007. Western Kentucky offers 15 residence halls for students who wish to live on campus. The dorms at Western are a lot of fun. And they've done a lot of renovations in the past three or four years to ensure that you're living, you know, as nicely and comfortably as you can while you're... while you're here at Western. From academic and service organizations to an active Greek life and intramural and club sports on campus, there's plenty of opportunity for WKU students to get involved. Another example of the excellence that we get with working closely with these students over several years is the Benjamin Gillman scholarship, which is a very prestigious study abroad scholarship. There was only nine given in the state of Kentucky last year. Five of them went to WKU students. With that, students will be spending a year in China, studying in Vietnam, studying in the United Arab Emirates. You name a country on this planet and we probably have had a student there in the last couple years. Famous alumni include movie director John Carpenter, professional golfer Kenny Perry, and the current head coach of the Cleveland Browns, Romeo Crennel. The school is the fastest growing university in Kentucky and one of the fastest growing schools in the nation over the last decade. If you're looking for a friendly, tight knit college campus, brimming with school spirit that offers a high quality education in a beautiful hilltop setting, be sure to check out Western Kentucky University.
