Hey, what’s up, I’m Nicole.

And I’m Shayna and you guys
are watching YOUniversity TV.

Today we’re at Whittier College.

Which is home of the Poets.

Come join us on our campus tour.

Come join us on our campus tour.

Whittier College is located
in Whittier, California

at the crossroads of Los Angeles
and Orange Counties

in sunny southern California.

This area offers
unique opportunities

to surf in the morning,
go hiking at night,

or even go skiing
in the afternoon.

You can go to Los Angeles,
Hollywood, Long Beach,

San Diego.

There’s always a party
going on around somewhere.

There’s events, organizations,
and museums.

Concerts are always
around here so, I mean,

you’re in Southern California,
there’s always something,

the beach is not very far,
Disneyland’s not very far,

everything's really close.

Whittier College sits
on 74 acres among

the La Puente Hills
and is on the eastern side

of historic uptown Whittier.

The campus is constructed
in Mediterranean and modern

architectural styles
and features towering palms

and other trees indigenous
to southern California.

One particular campus
icon is the rock,

which was installed by senior
pranksters in the 1920s

and is painted daily
by student organizations

who make reservations far
in advance for this privilege.

This is a wonderfully diverse
student population.

I’m a first generation
Mexican-American,

the first person to get beyond
sixth grade in my family.

Well we are the only liberal
arts school that’s also

an HSI Hispanic-
Serving Institution.

Almost one quarter
of our students

are first time college entrants
from Latino backgrounds.

At the same time we have
large groups of students

from the Hawaiian Islands,
Bulgaria, Yugoslavia,

from Ukraine, from Belorussia.

So here we are, 1,275 students,
and we have an incredibly

cosmopolitan,
global student population.

If you’re thinking of applying
and wondering what it takes

to get into Whittier,
the average honors GPA

is a 3.5 and the average
overall SAT score is a 1650.

All students pay just under
$32,000 for one year’s tuition,

plus approximately $5,000
for a double room

and $4,000 for
regular room and board.

Whittier College students get
their choice of 31 majors

and 32 minors that are
offered in 23 disciplines

and the average class
size is just 19 students.

The Whittier Scholars program
is specific to Whittier College,

and what it allows you to do is
design your own education,

that means you don't have any
general education requirements.

Basically you get to pick
the classes that you’re

interested and at the end,
when you’re a senior,

you have to present sort
of like a graduate thesis.

Some of the most popular majors
are business administration,

psychology, political science,
biology, and English.

Whittier employs 90
full time faculty members

and 100% have their PhD or a
terminal degree in their field.

Plus, with a student to faculty
ratio of only 13 to 1,

you will get more than
your share of opportunity

to interact closely with
all of your professors.

I have met people who
are experts in their field,

um, I have met people who
really can give great insight

to the fields that
I want to work in.

It’s just an amazing experience
to talk with people

of such great expertise.

The Garrett Faculty Masters
house is located on campus.

Professors live here
and students are invited

to come in and learn
through speakers,

fireside chats, and dinners.

One of them will actually
take you to his house

and cook for you, like,
the entire class will go

and cook and it’s a,
it’s a pretty cool thing.

The Whittier College Poets
compete in 21 intercollegiate

programs at the NCAA
Division III level.

Students can choose between
seven residence halls.

You’re required to live here
your first three years

and most people live here
up until their fourth year

including myself, I’m a senior,
and I’m living on campus still.

There’s room for everyone,
it’s fun, the RAs are cool,

so it’s actually nice
to live on campus.

Some people live off campus,
but even if they do,

they’re really close.

Don’t get too comfy in
those rooms, though,

because Whittier has more than
70 clubs and organizations

on campus.

The college also has their
own brand of fraternities

and sororities called societies.

And these societies bring
students of all different

backgrounds together
for socializing

and, most importantly,
community involvement.

There are ten societies
currently at Whittier.

Guess who graduated in 1934.

President Richard M. Nixon.

Not only was he a student here,
but he was the president

of the student body and he
played on the football team.

Look, he’s right here!

So if an independent,
nationally recognized,

liberal arts institution sounds
like it’s right up your alley,

be sure to look into
Whittier College.

Well that’s it for us and our
tour of Whittier College

in Whittier, California.

Thank you guys
so much for joining us,

we’ll see ya real soon.
