For YOUniversity TV,
I'm Chloe.

And I'm Levon and we're
at University of Nevada.

Let's go run with
the Wolf Pack.

The University
of Nevada-Reno

is nestled at the base of
the Sierra Nevada Range.

The campus is just 45 minutes
away from the mountains

and world famous
Lake Tahoe's skiing

and recreational opportunities.

The city of Reno is not
a humungous city,

but it's not too small either.

There's so much culture
and life and art downtown.

There's jazz clubs,
there's all sorts of nightlife.

It's just a great place to be.

If you're up for a day trip,
Interstate 80 will lead you

to the San Francisco Bay area
and US-395 will take you to

Yosemite National Park,
Las Vegas, or Los Angeles.

The main University
of Nevada-Reno's campus

has nearly 300 acres,

located just north
of downtown Reno

and the new Kayak Park
on the Truckee River.

The campus' quadrangle
has been listed

as a Jeffersonian
academic village

on the National Register
of Historic Places.

These giant elm trees
that surround the quad

were planted in 1908.

And in 1985, the Nevada
State Legislature

declared the campus
as a state arboretum.

16,681 students hail
from all 50 states,

and international students
from more than

70 different countries.

The male to female
ratio is 45:55.

We have Mackay Week coming up
and we're having the Undie Run

and it's actually
a clothing drive.

You show up in clothes you want
to donate, you take it off,

and then you run across
campus in your underwear,

and that's right before finals.

Incoming freshman have an
ACT of 22 and an SAT of 1040.

Students need to have
a 3.0 grade point average

for the required
academic courses

and transfer students need a 2.5
cumulative grade point average

and a minimum of 24
transferable semester credits.

We look at only the,
what we call academic core,

and the academic core
consists of English,

math, science
and social science.

So only those areas.

We also do weight those
classes for students that take

either international
baccalaureate,

advanced placement,
or honors classes

within those because
we want students to take

as rigorous a curriculum
as possible.

If you are from in-state,
a full year of tuition

will run you around $4,000,
and about $15,000

if you're from out-of-state
with exceptions.

There are substantial
tuition discounts for

Western undergraduate
exchange students,

Good Neighbors,
and children of alumni.

Room and board is
close to $8,000 per year

and an extra $1,000 for books
and student fees.

We have minimum
guaranteed scholarships,

and if a student
goes to our website

and looks for our
scholarship matrix,

they can match up
their GPA on one side

and their test
score on the other.

If they have that GPA
and that test score

and they apply to
us by February 1,

then they'll receive at
least that scholarship.

University of Nevada-Reno
offers more than 75 majors,

70 masters degree programs,
and 44 doctorate programs.

It is one of only two
academic centers in the world

dedicated to the study
of Basque Diaspora,

and the campus awards
a PhD in Basque studies.

And a new degree
in environmental studies

is available through
the Academy for the Environment.

Computer science
recently added

a minor in digital
and interactive games.

And the Center for Civil
Engineering earthquake research

has its own large
structures shake table.

Okay, phew, I'm good.

They use GPS satellite systems
to look at earthquake activity

and to then make predictions
about tsunamis,

so that we can
perhaps try to develop

a more effective and efficient
early warning system.

94% of tenured faculty
and 74% of full-time faculty

hold the highest degrees
attainable in their fields.

Average class size is
fewer than 30 students.

Lab sizes are
near 15 students.

Faculty members teach
more than 91% of classes

and the faculty to
student ratio is 17:1.

We consider
ourselves a family here,

and that's the beauty
of our program.

I'm pretty laid back
and the students know that.

So it's not Dr. Mitchell,
Professor Mitchell,

it's just Paul.

The university
is home to one of

the country's largest
study abroad programs,

the University Studies Abroad
Consortium, or USAC.

The USAC is the University
Study Abroad Consortium.

Students from all
over the United States

come together and go
to certain places where

they have their study abroad
set up all over the world;

England, France, Costa Rica.

The Nevada Wolf Pack
compete in

the NCAA Division I
Western Athletic Conference,

with 7 sports for men
and 12 sports for women.

Former Wolf Pack
football star, Nate Burleson,

is now a top receiver
in the NFL.

And Nevada and its
in-state rival, UNLV,

play for the Fremont
Cannon, the largest

and most expensive traveling
trophy in college football.

Students live on campus in
one of eight residence halls.

Two of the halls
are uniquely reserved

for returning
and transfer students.

And for students
that are interested

in specific
academic areas,

there are three dedicated living
and learning communities.

Nevada's student
organizations plan

more than 500 events
a year on campus.

There are more than 200 clubs
and organizations recognized

by the Student Government,
including intramural sports,

eight social fraternities,
and five social sororities.

There's always a lot to do.

Whether you live in
the residence halls,

you can always go and do
activities that the different

Residential Assistants put on.

University of Nevada Reno has
an impressive list of alumni.

Dr. Susan Desmond-Hellman,
an oncologist

and President of Product
Development at Genentech

is listed in
"Fortune" magazine's

50 most powerful
women in business.

And don't forget the six
Pulitzer Prize winners.

Gifted 11
to 17-year-olds

study at the Davidson
Academy of Nevada,

the country's only free
public specialized school

for very smart kids.

So if you'd love to follow in
the footsteps of greatness

and are looking for
a tailor-made place that

fits your academic needs
and gives you plenty to do

in your spare time,
be sure to put

University of Nevada-Reno
on your list of go-see colleges.

Thanks so much for joining
us on our campus tour of

the University of Nevada-Reno.

For YOUniversity TV,
I'm Chloe Dolandis.

And I'm Levon Harvey
and we'll see you next time.
