Hey, what's up? I'm Sheana Jeanne and this is Youniversity TV where we put you in university. Say we're here at Missouri State University. It's a public 4-year institution with all the opportunities of a large school but with a feel of a small one. Missouri State is located in Springfield, Missouri which is the third largest city in the state and although it has a small town feel, it offers big city perks. Missouri State University's compact campus is in the heart of Springfield. The beautiful landscape is one of the university's trademarks. For the most part, students can easily walk across the campus in 10 minutes or less. This is one popular big bronze bear. Students climb up on top of the bear paw and take a snapshot with the school mascot, the hotspot to strike a pose. Cheese. Missouri State enrolls nearly 17,000 students on the Springfield campus of which more than 14,000 are undergraduates.

I didn't even wanna look at this school. I was dead set on a different school and I took a tour here basically that made my parents happy. I love the people and I love the campus and I never applied to any other school.

Minority students make up just under 10 percent of the student body which features a female to male ratio of about 56 percent women to 44 percent men. Missouri State is a selective admission institution. Entering freshman must have completed a 16 class core curriculum and have one of the following: a 24 on the ACT, a GPA of 3.5 or higher, graduate in the top 25 percent of their class or have a qualifying combination of test score and class rank for GPA.

We have a strong focus on the career success of our students as evidenced by one of the largest cooperative education program which you'll find in the Midwest and we think if you look at us in terms of affordability and value, it's tough to beat.

Tuition for Missouri students including room and board is very affordable, running about 12,000 dollars per year. Tuition for out-of-state students is about 17,000 per year.

We have one of the largest college of businesses in the state.

Missouri state offers more than 150 undergrad programs and nearly 50 graduate programs so there's plenty of choices available.

We have the AACSB accreditation about 10 percent of the college of businesses worldwide have that designation.

Students also have access to the career services office to help them focus academic programs toward career goals.

I actually thought that it was just a bunch of book, work, and stuff like that and they actually got me an internship this past summer with a Fortune 500 company and a lot of what they have thought me, pretty much all of it, was just spot on although my supervisor's [inaudible].

Popular majors at Missouri State University include business, education, health sciences, and fine arts. I bet you didn't know, Missouri State was one of the first universities to offer a complete master's program over the internet.

The Honors College has just started a journal for undergraduate research and oftentimes students in sciences especially will work with professors.

Missouri State has over 700 fulltime faculty members and 90 percent of them have a PhD or terminal degree, plus with a student to faculty ratio of just 18 to 1, instructors are able to be in tune with the needs of their students.

I also had an experience where I lost a family member in my first semester here and so they were unbelievable on making sure I came back to campus or make me came back to school and, you know, well don't worry about what you've missed, we'll make it up on your own time.

Sports add another dimension of excitement on campus as 16 men's and women's bears athletics teams compete at the division 1 level. Thinking about living on campus? Missouri State has award-winning nationally recognized housing including 11 different residence halls and apartments. All single students under 21 with fewer than 30 hours of credit are required to live on campus.

We meet people on residence halls. In fact there's like an open door policy so as you're walking by, it's easy to walk into someone's room, say Hi, how you're doing. I'm Derry Young [phonetic] and go from there so it's helped out a lot.

This giant Echo Sphere sculpture is more than just a work of art. It's also a playground of sorts for students. I'm gonna give it a whirl. Go for a spin at Missouri State. Student life at Missouri State is a dynamic experience with nearly 300 organizations including special interest clubs.

I'm one of the founders of Ice Girls [phonetic] and it's a, we have a hockey club team here. We love the games. They usually sell out. We haven't lost a conference game so far this year so it's a lot of fun.

[ Music ]

This is not your average university bell tower. Missouri State is one of just a few schools in the entire country that offers a master's degree in music performance and allows students to specialize in the carillon. You also may have heard of some former Missouri State theater students and movie stars like John Goodman and Kathleen Turner or Days of our Lives actor, Jay Johnson. If you're looking for a great education in the Heart of the Ozarks at a school featuring a small town feel that's big on student amenities, be sure to check out Missouri State University today. Thanks for joining us today in Springfield on our tour of Missouri State University. I am Sheana Jeanne and I'm out.
