You're watching Youniversity TV hello I'm Levonne. I'm Chloe and we're at Duke University a world-renowned research university. With the feel of a small liberal arts college, let's go. Duke is located in Durham, North Carolina just a few hours drive to the mountains or the beach, Durham is part of the Research Triangle Park, one of the nation's most successful research and science clusters of high tech industry with one of the highest concentrations of PhD's and MD's in the country. Duke's campus consists of about nine thousand acres of land, academic and residential facilities sit on only about a thousand acres of property so it feels a lot like a campus in the forest. The National Museum is a major center for the arts on campus it's become a hub of undergraduate student life. Duke has about sixty-seven hundred graduate students and sixty-three hundred undergraduates from about eighty-five countries and every State in the U.S. More than 40% of undergraduates are minority and half of the students are men and half are women. Duke University is highly selective almost a third or incoming students have a combined SAT reading and math score of fifteen hundred and roughly half placed in the top 10% in their high school class. We like to have a mix of students that are well rounded, they do a lot of things well and mixed in with students where there are one or two things that really stands out, that they do something really on an exceptional level. What we're interested in is what a student does outside of the classroom, in the school community, or in the broader community. Tuition, room and board at Duke costs about $48,000 but more than 40% of Duke Students receive needs based financial aid. The families whose income is $60,000 or less we are not going to ask the parents for any money towards their child's Duke Education. Duke has two undergraduates, one graduate, and seven professional schools. Select one of forty majors or design your own. In Trinity College of Arts and Sciences, Economics and Biology are amongst the most popular fields of study and about a quarter of the undergraduates at Duke are Engineering majors in the Pratt School of Engineering. Duke encourages undergraduates to conduct research with Professors. More than half of Duke students have one on one mentoring experience before they graduate. I got involved with a Howard Hughes fellowship, if you're interested in scientific research it's definitely a great opportunity. It doesn't matter how much experience you had some people came in with a couple of years of experience working in labs before and I came in with no experience and it's kind of shown me what I want to do in life. This is one of the hot spots on campus. A cool place to hang. The Smart Home is a completely green building designed by students and their professors. Constructed with the latest environmental technology. It's a ten-person dorm and a live-in lab. So what we have here is basically the house of the future and students come to us and we provide them with funding, research support, faculty support, and industry support that they can take their own ideas for Smart technologies and policies and make them a reality. Duke has over twenty-six hundred full time faculty members and students will tell you that their learning subject matter from books written by their very own professors. About 65% are tenured or tenure track and the ratio of students to faculty is eleven to one. I have a history of doing virtual reality and so I was recruited to Duke to come and set up a virtual reality facility here. I was extremely excited to come here because Duke has a world-class medical school and the room is you're totally enclosed in your virtual world whatever that might be. It might be the inside of a cell, it might be the inside of a human brain, you're inside that your whole visual field of view is encompassed. We also have total control over what you can hear so you have this sense of being immersed in your data. Duke is the only top Ten University on the east coast that has the Vision I Athletics. The Blue Devils compete in the twelve member ACC and field twenty-six teams. Duke's teams are consistently ranked among the nation's best and strongest producing more than two hundred all Americans, twenty-six Olympians, fourteen double NCAA titles and some wild and dedicated fans like the Cameron Crazies. 80% of students live on campus and all first year students are housed in one of the fourteen resident's halls on the East Campus. It's been a phenomenal experience really my first year I was in the Wellness Dorm and we just created such a good community, it was ninety students and we were able to really bond and it just really helped in adjusting to Duke. Duke really does a good job at providing you know balance between academics and social life, I think a lot of people here do many different activities. Duke's students are very active with well over four hundred organizations whether they be social or cultural, athletic or service oriented. As part of the Duke engaged program you can immerse yourself in fieldwork that contributes to the public good. And spend a semester or summer around Durham or as far away as Africa. It's when students study abroad or they do Duke engage that's when they have these experiences that literally change their lives. I teach a Duke and God program, I do a study abroad and every year we take students and every year there's a major life transformation. A kid had an idea for a school in Kenya and he worked with a professor and worked with funding and the school was there for him you know to give him the funds to do so and it's just amazing that someone who has an idea like that you know if they put in the time and they put in the effort that Duke is there to give them the opportunity to give them the funds. So if you're looking to be center field in sports and academics and you've got the grades join the Blue Devils at Duke University. Thanks for joining us at Duke University in Durham North Carolina, I'm Levonne. And I'm Chloe, let's go Duke. [ Music ]
