Hey what's up, guys? I am Shanna Gene and this is Youniversity TV where we put you in university. Today we are at Dixie State College of Utah home of the Rebels. Dixie State is located in St. George, Utah, which is located in the southwest part of the state and has about three hundred sunny days each year. St. George is the fastest growing city in the U.S. with a population of sixty five thousand and a county population of about one hundred and forty thousand.

It's always nice down here, it's usually always sunny.

One hundred and fifteen degrees here, we can sit in the shade and it feels good.

Dixie is just right in the heart of St. George and with the weather and the people and everything, I've always had great experiences.

Dixie State's campus is located in the heart of St. George featuring large open green spaces and is within walking distance of restaurants, bike trails, shopping and factory outlet stores.

This is an outdoor recreation paradise, a lot of cultural activities for a community of this size. We have many theatrical opportunities, musical opportunities, wonderful art galleries; it is a very culturally oriented community in addition to the outdoor recreation.

Dixie State College currently enrolls over six thousand students with a population of fifty-four percent female to forty-six percent male, minority students make up twelve percent of the student body.

We are an open enrollment institution.

Meaning that incoming freshmen only need to submit an application plus fee, a high school transcript, and SAT or ACT scores.

We do require placement tests because we want students to get placed properly.

Dixie State is ranked by U.S. news and world reports as the third least expensive four-year public institution in the country. Tuition for Utah residents runs about twenty seven hundred per year and about ninety four hundred per year for out of staters.

Look up and you'll know that you are in a college town. High in the red rock above St. George there's a giant D. Students hike up the mountain every year to repaint the emblem. Dixie State College currently offers twelve different bachelor's degrees along with an associate of science and associates of art degrees. Some of the most popular majors include: business administration, communications, nursing, elementary education, and computer and information technology.

In an emergency situation every second counts, here in this ambulance simulator students learn how to save lives while racing patients to the hospital. Dixie state has a nationally recognized dental hygiene program and their nursing program routinely earns the highest pass rate among all nursing programs in the state on the registered nurse licensure examination.

We have an actual dental lab here at the college where students can actually come and get their teeth cleaned; it gives our students the opportunity to actually feel like they are working in a dental office. We also have a mobile clinic that goes around and gives them a whole bunch of diversity in different mouth situations.

Dixie State College has a student to faculty ratio of twenty three to one making for a great learning environment.

One of the great things about Dixie is because it is a smaller school; you have a lot of hands on opportunities. In the anatomy lab, you are able to have a male and a female cadaver that we work on twice a week and we are able to dissect it ourselves. And a lot of different colleges don't get to have that opportunity to work on cadavers every week and learn that way. That is the best way to learn the human body.

Ten men's and women's rebel athletic teams compete at the division two level in the PAC West conference. Dixie State has living options on campus ranging from traditional residence halls to apartment style living.

You can get a taste of the Tropics at Dixie State; it's the only college in Utah with palm trees, paradise.

Where else can you go skiing in the morning and go golfing in the afternoon? With several national parks and ski resorts within driving distance, Dixie's students have the ability to do just that. In addition, students have hundreds of clubs and organizations available on campus.

For people who like the outdoors this is an unbelievable place to come. We have plenty of rock climbing, mountains biking, hiking, we have Zion's, which is forty-five minutes away.

And there is a place where you can really do some interesting geology as well as biology. I am personally going to supervise four under graduates this summer and we are going to go and repel into some of these little canyons in Zion, which are of course beautiful and check out these frogs that live there and look for DNA differences among the frogs in the different canyons.

We have sand hollow kids go weight boarding, boating, cliff jumping, so there are a lot of outdoor activities that people engage in and they get together and they have clubs and it is a great way to meet people too.

I think that kind of opportunity that is here is pretty unique.

I don't see any problem with someone not feeling welcomed and comfortable here.

If you are looking for the best education under the sun in one of the fastest growing places in the country, that's as close to snow skiing as it is to the entertainment capital of the world be sure to check out Dixie state college today.

Thanks for coming along on our campus tour in St. George at Dixie State college of Utah. I'm Shanna Gene, see you later.
