Hey everybody! YOUniversity TV here in Los Angeles, California. I’m Chloe. And I’m Levon and we're at UCLA where the academic programs go way beyond the traditional. UCLA is in the residential neighborhood of Westwood Village between Beverly Hills and Bel Air. Located on 419 wooded acres, UCLA is 15 minutes from the beach, 20 minutes from Hollywood, and two hours from the mountains or the desert. You can ski in the morning, have lunch in Palm Springs, and even surf in the Pacific all in the same day. There’s tremendous diversity. Just, first of all when you consider the city itself, the location being in UCLA, being in Los Angeles, the resources with regards to entertainment, the resources with regards to-- There’s really anything that you can imagine. UCLA is one of the world’s great research institutions and the largest and most comprehensive university in California. With nearly 26,000 undergraduates, UCLA Bruins come from all 50 states and more than 100 countries. And UCLA is one of the nation's most ethnically, culturally, and economically diverse universities. UCLA is extremely selective in its admission. UCLA is a very competitive university, and each and every year we tend to get more applications than any other school in the country. We take a holistic approach when we look at the application which means that we’re taking into account things that the student is doing both in the classroom and out of the classroom. And so while GPA is important, how many honors classes a student is taking is important, SAT scores are important. In addition to that, we want to see students who are leaders and movers and shakers. California residents can expect to pay about $7,500 a year in fees. Non-residents pay about $8,200, plus an additional $20,000 for non-resident tuition. More than 60% of UCLA students receive financial aid. Take a look at UCLA’s undergraduate programs and you’ll find some of the best academic studies in almost any field. 130 majors, 109 academic departments, 5,000 courses, 11 graduate professional schools, and 3,800 faculty. Popular majors are psychology, economics, political science, English, history, sociology, film, engineering, chemistry, nursing, and math. UCLA is one of the most vibrant intellectual communities-- something that undergraduate students might not fully appreciate, but it’s a real opportunity for them. UCLA has a lot more to offer than the traditional classroom experience. Incoming students can begin their studies with a freshman cluster that involves you in a year-long learning experience. They cover a lot of topics and they get a lot of GEs out of the way, so it ends up being an amazing experience. And freshmen can choose from among 200 small group seminars or try the enriched educational opportunities in the honors program. Working with some of the world's top faculty, UCLA students can conduct important research of their own. We have professors who have won Nobel Prizes, who are Guggenheim Fellowship winners and Fulbright Scholars, and you can do one-on-one research with them. As an undergraduate student, you want to be exploring lots of different options, and you can do it here at UCLA and know that you’re really talking with the very best. And the university’s two undergraduate research centers can help you get started. Here in this lab at UCLA and tons of other labs across campus, there are a lot of principal investigators who are more than willing to teach how research is done, take them sort of under their wing. At UCLA, community involvement is a cornerstone of undergraduate education. You can participate in local, state, or national programs that combine a volunteer experience with academic coursework. The UCLA Bruins are the nation’s most successful college athletic program-- the first to reach 100 NCAA championships. For the informal athlete, UCLA offers 36 club and 20 intramural sports, amazing workout facilities right in the middle of campus, and an aquatics center on Santa Monica bay. Or go to the Sunset Canyon for volleyball, tennis, or a dip in one of the two swimming pools. The unique thing about UCLA's housing facility that I really like compared to other schools is that it’s all in one location. They call it "The Hills" so you don’t really-- I know at other schools, kind of the dorms are spread throughout the campus and if you want to go see your friend at night you’re walking across campus. But at our school it kind of feels like your own little UCLA city where everyone's really close and there’s a lot of interaction between everyone. Student housing is guaranteed for three years and the campus offers traditional shared dorm rooms, suites, and private rooms. Eat a la carte in one of the four residential restaurants or meet at the late night cafe. The dining facilities are amazing. And they started a new thing where they’re, like, kind of, you can swipe and take stuff to go with you, which is really, really good. The residential community even has its own performance theater, television studio, and TV channel. There are almost 900 student organizations at UCLA. The opportunities for involvement are endless. UCLA is a huge part of the Los Angeles cultural scene. They have an art gallery, two museums, and seven theaters that host world class performers almost every day. So where else can you combine so many academic opportunities with social and cultural events, and with a year round average temperature of 73 degrees and 330 days of sunshine? That’s UCLA. Thanks for tuning in to YOUniversity TV, where we put the "you" in "university." And the U in UCLA. I’m Chloe. And I’m Levon. And we’ll see you later.
