Hello, I'm Ferrari St. Paul, I'm here to interview David Peters on what it's like to be an engineer.

 Great.

 Is he here today?

He is, he's right in our conference room working on the prospect.

Fantastic. Do you think I'll need this hard hat?

I don't think so, I think you're pretty well [inaudible].

 Hi, I'm Ferrari.

 Welcome, how are you doing?

 Nice to meet you David.

You look like you bilind [assumed spelling].

 I'm so ready for this.

 You're ready to join us?

 I am.

Okay, great. I don't think you'll need this right now.

 No?

Engineers work in everything from design and development to testing and production. Here at Hanson Professional Services Incorporated, several types of engineers work together under one roof.

In our office, we have architects, mechanical engineers, electrical engineers, and plumbing engineers.

Hanson specializes in civil and structural engineering. When his company gets a contract for a project, it goes to the architect first.

We do a skin or layout, conceptual layouts that we take to the client and once it's approved, it moves from different phases. Now we're including mechanical and electrical systems.

So then, we have to get very carefully and detailed, get the exact dimensions of the equipment, the ductwork, the piping, and everything that we want to install and be sure it will fit in to these tiny little spaces that the architect gives us.

Depending upon what you decide to specialize in, you may work in an office or out in the field, and you'll typically work forty hours a week. A bachelor's degree is required for almost all entry-level jobs. And the learning doesn't stop there.

The real education starts after you graduate from school and you start to actually use the codes and see how they apply.

The posted resumes, which used to be maybe several thousand, now are up to thirty thousand in some areas. So there's more people out on the street now looking for jobs.

The starting salary for engineers is much higher than many other careers.

I'd say right now you're probably looking at between forty-five and sixty thousand dollars a year for an entry level engineering position.

Did you see yourself working as an engineer?

Mathematics is still a key because you need to do equations, you need to select equipment based on calculations, and then you need to work with dimensions so that you know that five foot four inches will actually fit in to a six-foot space or something like that.

Well thanks so much for your time David, I really appreciated all of this, and I will leave you to this very confusing lighting grid.

 Ferrari, it's been a pleasure.

 Thank you.

 Don't forget your hard hat.

 Sweet.
