NYU Names New President

By Beau Benson, NYU Admissions

Let’s give a warm, Undergraduate Admissions welcome to Andrew Hamilton!

Currently the Vice Chancellor of the University of Oxford, Hamilton will be hanging up his Oxford blues in favor of some Mayfair Violet, when he becomes the 16th president of New York University in January 2016, following the retirement of our beloved John Sexton.

A noted chemist, Hamilton (Andrew, Andy, A-Ham — what will his nickname be!?!) has served as the senior officer of Oxford since 2009. Prior to that, he was the Provost of Yale University and the Benjamin Silliman Professor of Chemistry and Professor of Molecular Biophysics and Biochemistry.

Andrew Hamilton, Oxford University’s vice chancellor, will replace John Sexton as president of New York University.

Hamilton arrives at NYU during a particularly exciting time in our history. Upon his inauguration, he will assume the presidency of not only the largest private research university in the United States but also one of the most recognizable universities around the globe given our degree-granting campuses in Abu Dhabi and Shanghai, and our 11 additional academic centers.

Over the next ten months, Hamilton will certainly be brushing up on his NYU history and Hashtag, but from one Violet to a future Violet, I have compiled (with some assistance), the five most important pieces of NYU advice:

  1. It’s the College of Arts & Science. Not Sciences. And it’s “Beau-bst” not “Bob-st.”
  2. Speaking of Bobst: while our athletic teams may be nicknamed “The Violets,” our mascot is in fact the Bobcat, named after the abbreviation for the University’s Bobst Library computerized catalog.
  3. While we are on the subject of athletics: NYU has a long and proud athletic history that even predates that time when we helped to form the NCAA! And remember: despite the fact that we do not have a football team, just think of NYU every time the Heisman is awarded, because the trophy is modeled after Ed Smith, a leading player on the 1934 NYU football team.
  4. NYU has a presence on six continents — so, basically, that means we need to open our next Global Academic Center in Antarctica.
  5. Real president’s give hugs. Not handshakes.

While we in Undergraduate Admissions are excited to welcome the arrival of NYU’s next president, we must thank (and hug) the visionary who led the University since 2002. President Sexton, John, we thank you for building the university of today which so many of us call home!
