College: Enjoying Every Second of Your Opportunity for “Higher” Educate Yourself

By Maria Fernanda Rada, YOUniversityTV Student Contributing Writer from Lynn University – Every new semester when the new class schedule comes out, you always get that typical adrenaline surge. Even if some of your classes might not be of your major, and might sound a bit boring when you first see them in paper, college is not the place to judge a book by its cover. There is always the chance that at least one courses will turn to be super interesting. That knowledge can even inspire to try a new hobby or life a new healthy life. Take as an example the core curriculum (obligatory classes) which are typically taken during the two first years. Lynn called these courses: Dialogues Of Learning.

As a freshman, I took a course called “Self and Society-Search for identity”. The professor made us read passages from different books from the most important authors in history. The book for the class was divided into sections by periods of time, it started with authors from the “ancient world” such as Aristotle and Plato, then with authors from the middle ages such as Thomas Malory, authors from the Renaissance such as Shakespeare and Sir Walter Raleigh, and other 19th, 20th, and 21rst century authors such as John Locke, Rousseu and Ralph Waldo Emerson.

The titles Many of these readings are considered world master pieces and that is why liberal education institutions choose them. The titles “The Road Not Taken”, “The Struggle of My Life”(Nelson Mandela), and so many others will resonate in my head, and I will always remember how these stories taught to see and act so much better in the world. After taking some of these courses. I wanted to immerse myself much more in that world, so I made one of the most important decisions you make in college: choosing a minor. I decided to minor in International Affairs because I wanted to keep learning about the world and how people, institutions, companies etc get involved in the playing field. In other blogs I will be highlighting why can become so important in your life and how, at least, in my case they inspired me to get involved in Boca/Florida community to make a difference.
